MXR M-80 help?

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, so my guitarist's girlfriend's cat peed in my M-80. It still works, mostly, but the footswitches are corroded/stuck/frozen. If you stomp it hard, it will change settings, but it doesn't spring back to where you can switch it again. You have to physically grab the button on the footswitch and pull it up.

I've looked on MXR's website, and the link to their parts list is dead. Does anyone here know what kind of footswitches are inside the M-80 and/or what I would need to replace them with?

Please and thanks!

Wow, that's not what I was expecting. Don't hurt the cat, but maybe the girlfriend needs a new litter box?

If you can open it up and take a photo, it'd be easy to figure out. Possibly 3PDT, but I don't remember for certain if the M-80 is true bypass.

Maybe try some contact cleaner and/or lubrication? If the switch still functions, you probably just need to remove the corrosion. And the cat...

There seems to be a strange preponderance of cat threads recently. This might be the third one I've seen today...

Whatever type they are, you might be able to just yank them out and wash them, leave them to thoroughly dry and whack 'em back in. If they are the actual switch type, as opposed to the plunger actuator type (+ tactile switch on the PCB) then that's even better.

When they worked normally, did they go "CLUNK" when you stomped on them or was it more of a gentle "click"?

My cat once destroyed my EHX Bass Micro Synthesizer.

Need Some Help with an Odd EHX Bass Micro Synth Mod...

Those pesky little felines... we bassists love them, but they love to trash our gear!

Most electronics supply houses carry aerosol contact cleaner, as does Radio Shack.

Give the switch a shot or two of contact cleaner while cycling the switch several times. You may have to open you M-80 and apply the contact cleaner from the inside - though the cat certainly had no problem gaining access with the unit closed

Works very well to clean up noisy pots, too!

Good luck

Reason #1 I dread leaving gear the jam spot. They are now down to 2 pisser cats. The cats run that house for sure.

according to what i can find online, the switches are DPDT (this based on doing a google search on the part number i got from dunlop/MXR) and they definitely "CLUNK" when you stomp them. mechanical switches instead of electronic.

Disassemble and clean

I would suggest removing the electronics from the case and then spraying them with contact cleaner or another type of non-water based cleaner. The gun cleaning spray will do a thorough job of cleaning it to. That way the cat residue can drain out. That will also avoid stripping the paint and lettering from the case. I would not use any solvent while the electronics are in the case. I wouldn't use water since it takes longer to dry and can also promote corrosion.

I have to leave my stomp boxes on the bed to keep my dog from chewing on them and my cables. Animals are great but they do put a damper on things.

It should be salvageable. Good luck!

demand sexual favors from the guitar player's girlfriend for two full years and have her replace the pedal...it's the least she could do...

+1 on the contact cleaner suggestions...
although fishtx suggestion considers serious thought, i.e., if the g/f is a hottie!!!

on a related note...
you may have been better off suggesting that the guitarist's g/f "sprayed" the stompbox...

then again...the cat story IS way more dramatic...
