MXR M-80 pedal problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a feeling that my MXR M80 DI got plugged into the wrong power supply, and now it appears to be shot.

I get the Power & Distortion LED's (with the 1-Spot or 9V battery), but I get no throughput whatsoever. No matter where I move it in the chain, I get nothing but hiss out of the amp. If I remove the MXR, everything is normal.

I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar issue and/or can offer some advice on how to test the circuit board components. I'm not afraid to open it up and perform some surgery, if there's a good reason.

It will cost roughly $60 to send it to Dunlop for repair...a new one will cost about $140. A used one will also cost between $50-100. I really liked this box - added some oomph to my weak-ass playing.

Did you try using it by itself, on a fresh battery, with nothing else in the chain (besides bass and amp)?

Yup. Tried a new 9V and got the same results with only Bass > MXR > Amp

Okay, this is going to sound stupid, but are you sure you're plugged into the input and not the parallel out? I've done that twice now...

that's a fair question - it's pretty easy to do.
i've double-checked my setup and i've tried several different 1/4" cables and have even run it out XLR to the mixing board.

Dunlop is pretty convinced that it's the DI, and it's fried. I'm just trying to weigh the $60 to fix my broken/used one against $60 for a used one in good shape or a new one.

I'd really like to open it up and start testing, but I really don't know exactly what to look for.

The real problem is that I've spen so much $ this year on stuff, that my wife no longer thinks it's "a cute hobby".

I'd spend the $60 to get it repaired. At least, then you'll know what you're getting for your money. I'm always wary of used merchandise, unless I can try it first.
