i have read the compressor mega thread which is awesome, and i have narrowed it down to the these two compressors because of the price range so here goes:
i want a compressor that is smooth and does not boost my signal, my G&L L2500 is very hot even in passive mode, so my question is which one of these would would be best?, which one responds to subtle adjustments the best, which one gives equal attention to both high and low end?
Its a hard decision for me, i own a BBE sonic stomp which is high quality and i have owned an mxr distortion + in the past but it was stolen, anyway i remember the mxr being very good quality, and the BBE is well built also, so for me its a toss up, and unfortunately Guitar center does not have either in stock for me to try right now, so i ask you wonderful people to guide me.
Just so you know the set up i am putting the compressor in will be:
G&L L2500 passive mode, Aguilar Tone hammer, the compressor
(what ever one i buy) then BBE Sonic Stomp, going to my swr 750 watt head and a goliath 3 cab.
thanks people, you never let me down.

It has a "Bongomania Seal of Approval" as well. http://ovnilab.com/

Loses some lows, most noticeable if you play a 5'er. The Opto has less squash on tap, but is more even across the range and doesn't lose lows. |

Some of the others were noisy, didn't compress well or changed my tone when engaged. Yuck. The Demeter looks pretty good too but a bit pricey for this troll.

Why the BBE and not just an opto comp?

I only gig 5's, and I notice no low end drop, and no adverse affect on my tone, just smooth and usable compression, just what I was looking for. |

The Aphex is cheaply-built and does very little. |

How transparent is the Opto? Is it so mild that you wouldnt notice the effect being on? I use a BDDI, and wondering whether to go for the cheaper Dyno rather than the Opto that might not be enough even when cranked.........
If you have the Dyno on its lowest setting - is it still a heavier compression than the Opto??? |

Allot of Compressors I tried at the time sounded great on Guitar, but most sucked the low end when it came to bass, I forgot also to say I read that Aguliar Came out with a compressor pedal, I have heard good reviews, I wonder if Bongomania has tired it?

| | | | Surething, i know what you mean - i have used a super comp before and would expect the dyno to be simular.
I dont doubt the quality of the Opto - im just worried that id have it cranked, and not really think it was worth taking along to gigs due to it being too subtle |

In my experience, both of these pedals are ok - the BBE is transparent, but a little 'flat' sounding, while the MXR distorts at more decent comp settings.
There is a website that I stumbled across at www.ovnilabs.com which descripbes ALL kinds of comp's in refference to bass-playing!
That said, I have used (and highly reccomend) the DOD Milk-Box (FX-84). It is the SMOOTHEST sounding comp I have ever owned, far better for me than the MXR, BBE, Meek, MarkBass, Digitech, Boss, Ibanez, Ross, Keeley, etc etc etc.
It is an incredibly inexpensive pedal, and will definitely do your gear justice - it has Level, Compression, High-Expansion and Attack controls, and is definitely all I will ever use since I bought it.
Give them a try, see what works for you!
All the best,
JOHN. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
