MXR M80 DI+ Output Signal Question

Sign in to disble this ad
I used my M80 for the first time as a DI last night...

I've never used a DI before, and we were just trying some different things.

I'm curious if anyone else has a really low signal coming from their M80 on the DI?

We plugged mine directly into our singers power mixer. Our guitarist mic'd his cab and plugged into the same mixer.

On his channel, we only had to turn the volume level up to about 2 or 3 to get enough volume through the mains. Same for the vocals, and drums that we ran through the mixer. However, on my channel, we had to really crank the volume level up before we could even hear the bass coming through.

The level into my amp seems to be fine, although the volume knob on the M80 was only in the 9:00 position or so (right about where the volume is equal through my amp when the M80 is turned on or off).

Is there a way to adjust the signal going through the DI output? Or, do we just have to boost the volume on the mixer. Maybe I'm just missing something here... Hopefully, someone can chime in.

I may experiment by using the DI output from my GK head for reference. (Might also check that we didn't have a pad button pushed on the mixer! Just thought about that!)

That's a little odd, I've never had that problem. Are you using a battery, an AC adapter, or phantom? My first guess is a power prob, but other than that I don't know. Maybe the XLR cable? Someone with more knowledge will come along, I got nothing, sorry. It is a great little box for me, and I hardly use the distortion on it, just the DI.

I'm using basically a Onespot power supply (it's a different brand name, but same daisy chain idea).

Now that I think of it though, I may have had the power/ground button pushed in.

I don't know if the power mixer provides phantom power. (It's not mine, it's our singers).

XLR cables are balanced, and if for some reason one of the signal wires is open circuit you will instantly lose 6dB. I suggest you check the cables you were using.

Try plugging your bass directly into the mixer's jack input if it has one, and then go via the DI of the M80 to compare the volumes. With the M80 switched off, or just the eq channel without the color engaged and all settings at 12 o'clock the columes should all be just about the same.
