MXR-M80 vs. Sans Amp Bass Driver DI

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok Boys n Gals,

Toying with the idea of purchasing one of these two pedals....have read multiple reviews of both......they each have their supporters and detractors and their pros and cons

at this point i'm leaning towards the MXR simply because it seems capable of producing a few more sounds...

so if you had the chioce which one and why...?

I have both:
If you're looking for a mic'd up SVT like tone that's clean.
Get the Sans Amp.
If you want a little dirt blended in with your mic'd amp
Get the MXR.

Notes:
The Sans Amp get crackly when gain goes into distortion.
The MXR has a smoother crunch that fades out nicely.
The MXR has two channels, you can get a clean and crunch.
The Sans Amp is also a world class Direct Box.

Good luck with your choice,
Rick

Well, as is the case with most effect boxes or amps, you only use one sound at a time (typical player) so pick the one that gives the sound you'd most like to hear.

great assessment by ricktone...to get a 3 channel with the sansamp, get the programmable di. provides 3 channels for you to play around with.

It’s “horses for courses”; they’re both excellent as you can tell by the number of threads already posted. I tried both and chose the MXR, I just preferred it for my sound.

I own both, they get different sounds. I actually don't USE both now as my M-80 has seen maaany many gigs and something is a little messed up with it now...not sure what...

What I've noticed with the M-80 is that when it comes to the distortion channel, it sounds more like you have your clean signal, and then there's this second distorted signal. When you futz with the knobs, the device is acting as though you're moving volume knobs on the two channels up and down.

I've also found that while the M-80 produces excellent overall tones, I have an easier time emulating specific amp models with the Sans Amp.

My MXR M80 is always on, nice eq and sweet tone, and the distortion is so tweakable anyone could find their perfect dirt. The Sansamp seems more complicated, but I'm sure it's also a top notch pedal. You can't really go wrong either way.

There is a very large thread on this topic that dates back a few years. It's every bit as valid today as it was then. I recommend searching for it.

I'll have to say the M-80 it's been on my board for four years now and is still going strong in what ever I play the sound is very clean in the fact that even when i turn the gain realy high I never get a blended mess of distortion and the Eq on it does nicely for my tone , and PLUS it's built like a brick I've dropped it (carelessly) many times and it still holds up

Running an MXR into a sansamp produces some stellar tones

I've owned both, but I got a lot more use out of the MXR. It's just more usable for what I want. It really depends on your own taste in sound.

Use the MXR but only as am EQ and for the drive, dont like it as a D.I.
since I managed to play the Sansamp once and the MXR was a present, cant be of much help but say I like the sounds I get from this pedal and my soundman loves it live!

MXR is always in my set-up. Extremely great sound, multiple patch options, good clean DI... what more could one want??

After months of considering-testing these two and many others (from the Behringer and Hartke boxes to the Tonebone and EBS ones), I am getting the sansamp Para-driver tomorrow. FWIW the DI seemed a little "stonger" on the various Sansamps than on the MXR. That was the selling point for me, given that I was looking for a good DI first and foremost. The subtler OD the Sansamp gives also appealed to my ear more than the grittier distortion of the MXR, though this part is entirely subjective. Both pedals get a lot of love and there is a reason.
