which one is better for a nice drive sound. not full on distortion, just a nice slightly overdriven growl

i have used both Tech 21 products, no experience with the MXR. out of those 2, i would give the nod to the VT pedal due to the variety of tones it can put out, overdrive or not. the DI is awesome for what it is, a direct box complete with XLR out that will add some color to your tone, though not to the extent of the VT. if you really need the XLR out i would recommend the programmable DI from Tech 21. same basic controls but with 3 programmable channels to save your levels when you hit the tone jackpot.

FWIW i purchased the VT after deciding that i didn't need the XLR. it was a gamble (didn't try before buying) but it's been the best 150 bucks i've spent in a while.

I've had them all. My preference (for a nice drive sound) is:

1. Sansamp VT
2. MXR M80
3. Sansamp BASS DI

For full on distortion MXR is the best.

SansAmp VT - I've had all of the SansAmps (but no MXR M80), the VT can do those tones if you need it to & then some. IMO, the VT Bass Pedal serves up the best tones Tech21 has offered to date. I used to blend together the RBI & RPM rackmount units as my main rig for a couple of years. The VT pedal is kinda like that in a floor pedal version - did I mention the sweet tones?
