MXR M82 Bass Envelope Filter

Sign in to disble this ad
Been interested in one ever since I saw that demo by Uriah Duffy.
It sounds great in that demo, but I do see many of them for sale here in the classifieds.
For the many here that have tried one, what are the pros and cons of it? Uriah just makes it sound so damn good.

I have an MF101 that fills my needs but would like something smaller and simpler as a stand alone envelope filter.
Thanks guys.

The big difference is the Moog is a low pass filter and the mxr is band pass. I used a Moog with expression pedal to allow for slower sweeps. If you are just using it for envelope without feeding it a fuzz you would probably be happy with the mxr.

But they have a different character you need to take onto account as well

Yeah I understand they are very different.
I have owned a few filters but wound up selling all of them except the Moog and the Boss FT-2.
I mostly use effects with guitar, but a deep dark filter sounds so great on bass. Also, I would use some low gain OD on bass. Not fuzz.
What does the decay knob do? Does it adjust the closing of the envelope? If so, thats something I have been looking for in a filter for a while.
Thanks

Yep. That's what it does.

I just got one and it doesn't do that!
How this knob can be called Decay? It's more like the range (control?) knob on the Digitech Bass Synth Wah.
The pedal still sounds amazing though and has cured my Envelope filter needs. It's so rubbery, flexible and flat sounding unlike others I have tried, and i'm happy to have both this and the MF101 for their different uses, but I think i'd rather use the M82 for bass and the Moog for guitar.

I have the M82 and I really like it. The Decay knob lets you vary the frequency at which the sweep stops on its return trip. At least that is my understanding of what it does. I run mine at like 2 o'clock, but I'm not fussy about it.

The key to this pedal is getting a) the sensitivity right for your playing attack and b) the right mix between the FX and Dry knobs. Depending on how rich the mix is, you might go back to the other filter-related knobs and set them differently. Like, with a pretty Dry mix, you might want the filter set a little crazier. And with a fairly FX-heavy mix, you might want to tone the filter down a bit.

Great pedal. User friendly too - not always the case with enveloppe filter.
The previous incarnation of the pedale the MXR Auto Q Bass is very good too.

I do enjoy this pedal and appreciate having the flexibility of the dry/FX mix knobs.

I have noticed that the only sensitivity knob setting that triggers the effect is a narrow band in between the 3'oclock and full clockwise position. Has anyone else noticed this as well?

I'm also curious in terms of what you guys are doing for optimal settings overall, such as the filter on TLC's "Waterfalls."

Thoughts welcomed!

Yes. I find myself having to adjust this knob more than any of the others. I think it gets moved slightly in my bag or something. And, yes, it's a very narrow usable range for me. But I think this is simply to accommodate all kinds of basses from the lowliest of passives to the most roaring actives and everything in between.

Here's a pic of where mine is set at recently. I'm still struggling with finding "my" settings for this pedal. Maybe I'll try running the Dry and FX at the same level. I do try to keep the entire output at unity gain, more or less, so my compressor doesn't freak out when I turn it on.
