MXR Phase 90 or EHX Small Stone Nano

Sign in to disble this ad
Tried my guityar players vintage Boss PH 1r and loved it through my bass, so I defintely need a phaser.

Seems there is some love for both the Phase 90 ( the regular block letter version) and the Small Stone. Which one works best.
I will also be using this on guitar occasionally, so I need one that works well with both.....but bass is my primary concern.

I have also heard that there is a volume drop with the small stone..........help anyone ???

The Boss pedal was a late 70's/early 80's vintage pedal...not super easy to find.

I have seen that, in new pedals, the EHX Small Stone Nano and MXR Phase 90- have gotten some love....just wondeirng what people think work better out of the two.

The EHX Nano Stone sounds awesome on bass. No volume drop and very "wet" sounding. I have mine in a blend loop and it just sounds right. No fiddling necessary; adjust the rate and you're good to go.

Bonus:
Cheap
Small
9 v DC neg. center

I don't own either of these and I'm trying to select between the same two phasers. I've been reading comments on the TB boards for a couple of weeks about them and there are many.

Here's my conclusions. The Nano Small Stone seems to be considered the preferred "best value and sound" buy for bass. No bottom end loss, good sound, not as much flexibility. The Small Stone Nano does not have the volume loss issue. The new version of the Small Stone does, which is a different pedal.

The MXR phasers are also good but people seem to hear a little bottom end loss. However some people seem to like the effect better and it seems the MXR pedals are a little more flexible with the extra control.

For use with both bass and guitar I would probably choose the MXR. FYI, there are three versions: the regular block letter version, the custom shop script version (both with and without LED light) and the Eddie VanHalen version.

Look for posts or search for posts from the BigO....he's a phaser lover.

Hope this helps.

I can never remember, is it the Nano stone or the Nano clone that sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls? I've been having the phaser bug myself lately and been leaning toward the EHX route.
