MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz.

Search for it, it sounds good. Modern mid-rangey fuzz with good tonal variety.

Search on "nes" or "nintendo", there are a lot of threads about getting those sounds.

That's a good tip, but you realize that you can't search talkbass for strings under 4 characters, so "NES" won't be too useful.

As much as I like the El Grande, I don't think it has a digital or bitchrush sound at all...

Behold:
"Bass Bit Fuzz
If the 8-bit fuzz is lacking the tight low end and is too gated then the Bass Bit is what you're looking for. It's very compressed and retains the full bass side of your signal to keep your amp thumping. Originally designed for bass guitar, but many guitarists have decided to use it since it has such a full low end. True bypass & volume knob.
Availability: assembled when ordered
$100
Add an LED: $25"

From www.fxdoctor.com

It's an 8-bit fuzz... Nintendo-ish.

You probably want a gated fuzz like the Devi Ever Bass Fuzz or the Z. Vex Woolly Mammoth or the Zoom Ultra Fuzz.

I just picked up an Ultra Fuzz, and it sounds awesome combined with an envelope filter. Very synthy and fat.

Actually if it's Devi Ever I heartily recommend the Bit Mangler.

That's pretty cool. I just saw the demo of the Bass Fuzz that Grgyx did for Bassfuzz.com and thought it might be up Tomhanzo's alley.

IIRC, I've heard a lot of bad buzz on the FX doctor stuff. Basically the reliability doesn't seem to be there based on the reports of many a TBer. The Devi Ever BIT, and BIT Mangler might get you there, also the MXR Blue Box can do some NES-like stuff, as well as the Mid-Fi Glitch Computer, which is basically a super-glitchy Blue Box. Any sort of synth or fuzz that does extreme-square-wave stuff will get you most of the way there

Word. My Bass Microsynth gets glitchy and gated fuzzy weirdness depending on attack and settings. In a guitar heavy mix it sounds more like an evil fuzz than a synth the way I typically have it set.

Just to be nit-picky, actually it's words of under three letters that can't be searched with the basic non-Google TB search. So "NE" wouldn't get anything, but "NES" works fine. And as Karate pointed out, there's the Google TB search which will look up any string.

-Sorry for the derail, folks! Back to discussing bit-crushing video-game effects! I'll bring it back on track by mentioning the Alesis Bitrman, which is maybe not the greatest but you can find them very cheaply.

+1 too many fish in the sea to be eating carp. I've tried twice to get one of these, once direct (never got a response) and once from a dealer (arrived dead).

I'd try the Woolly Mammoth or the Fuzz Factory. Some wonky sounds going on there to be sure.
