I've been a big proponent of the Muff'n for a long time, and will continue to be. It's a great pedal for gritty, tubey OD. With a tube swap for a pair of 12AX7s, the thing can really roar.
A while back, I bought a Fulltone OCD out of pure curiosity generated by this forum (not the first time that's happened). I squeezed it on to my small pedalboard alongside my Muff'n and Depth Charge and gave it a few chances at band practice. Again and again, I kept finding that I like the OCD more than the Muff'n for overdrive!!
It's official, my Muff'n has been replaced. |

BUT the ocd holds it own very well left on all the time with slight dirt. they are very similar to me, but i wouldnt want 2 of each. the ocd can get a lot more trebly with the tone knob than the bassdrive. i really like them both and at the same low gain setting they almost sound identical. they both sound great though. haha i guess i cannot accurately descibe the difference, but i love them both and they sound great live.

I use my bassdrive for the "all the time grit" and would be content with it, so I would have to say if I could only keep one it would be the bassdrive. But I have an eq pedal that I pair with the OCD in a loop, so I can get extra bass, or no bass, all treble, etc. with the OCD. Only thing I dislike about the bassdrive is the lack of blue LEDs...haha.

| | | | Not my first post in favor of the OCD, it is a great pedal - for guitar or bass. One of my friends has more distortions than I can count with his guitar and I can ALWAYS tell when he's using the OCD vs. anything else it is that much better.
I used it in practice once and have yet to replicate the body of drive that is produced with the OCD. A turbo tube screamer in turbo mode thinks about sounding like that, then realizes while good, it's out of it's league. The Sansamp GT2 would be okay as well, except it leaves it's own fingerprints on everything it touches (not saying that's good or bad, just not the same). I've not tried a bassdrive yet and wouldn't care to since I'd just buy an OCD if drive was needed on more than 5 songs or so. As much as I'd like to play a Muff'n, I can't imagine fusing around with a tube fitted box when the OCD sounds as good as it does. |

Also, I'm not saying the OCD is a better pedal than the Muff'n, I just happen to prefer the sound of the OCD for the music I'm playing at the moment. The Muff'n continues to be an excellent pedal for gritty bass overdrive - for those people looking for that particular sound. The Muff'n will remain in my arsenal for the times I need that sound. |
