My Punch Factory is Tweakin' Out

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been using my Punch Factory a lot at band practices, mostly for my Chapman Stick but my bass too, but it's been cutting in and out-- getting quiet and distorting and cutting out completely. I can normally kick it or maneuver it back into place, but I think it's completely died. The input jack moves around, and i've opened it up a couple times and looked for anything messed but but I can't see anything. Any ideas?

I can take pictures if necessary.

That is exactly what happens with pedals like that which have the jacks soldered directly to the circuitboard. You can either re-solder the jacks or replace them with good metal ones, connected to the board by flexible wires.

I'd like to make this pedal uber good and long lasting so how can I go about replacing them?

And i'd like to thank Aphex and other brands for top notch craftsmanship.

Try replacing the entire pedal with something that's not a Punch Factory.

Money is a factor here...

Unless you have another idea that I could invest in later...

It's been a while since I opened up a PF, but I seem to recall there was room inside the housing for "normal" jacks. So get ye some 1/4" mono panel-mount input jacks from any electronics supply place. Preferable the ones you get should have a somewhat narrow profile, meaning they shouldn't have big insulating washers that stick out on the sides. De-solder the existing jacks, and connect the new jacks the same way, but using bits of flexible wire (about 2" or 3" long) to connect the jack solder tabs to the points on the board where the old jacks used to go.

If you DIY it should only cost a few bucks, but it might be worth a few more bucks to take it to somebody who's experienced in doing this sort of work. While you're at it, you might consider replacing the DC jack with a panel-mount one as well. That will probably require drilling a bigger hole in the housing to fit the new jack, though.

My Punch Factory crapped out in the same way. I contacted Aphex and they authorized me to send it to them and they repaired it and shipped it back at no charge.

I was the second owner, had no bill of sale and did not expect warranty coverage, so I was very impressed with their service.

You can't lose giving them a try. They will likely do the same for you and all it will cost is one way shipping.

mine has worked perfectly since the repair almost 2 years ago.

Do you have details for their repair centre? I tried to do likewise a while back and got the total run-around....
