Is my rack set up right??

Sign in to disble this ad
I have:

alesis 3630 compressor
dbx EQ
korg Tuner

this is how they all sit in my rackmount case. The problem I am having is the compressor doesn't seem to be working the way it should be, neither is my EQ. I have a Hartke head amp with an effects loop that goes "in" the tuner all the way up and "out" of the compressor.

I am new to using rack units so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tony

Does your head have a tuner out?
IF yes:
Bass -> Hartke ->
effect loop out -> tuner out->
Eq -> tuner
compressor->
effects return

If not:

Bass -> tuner-> Hartke -> effect loop out ->Eq ->compressor-> effects return

Don't Hartke heads have a graphic eq already? I get rid of the other eq if you really don't need it.

First put each item one at a time in the loop to see if they work individually. If one works by itself in the loop, then add one more item in the chain and see if they work together. Doing this in a careful and systematic manner allows you to isolate the actual problem(s).

At each stage of the process take notes about which pieces worked on their own, or in combination with which other pieces. When pieces don't work, write down exactly how they don't work -too quiet, too noisy, no signal on the comp's gain reduction meters, etc.

Once you've gone through and tried each of them in all the combinations, report your findings here and then we can actually try to solve the problem.

Be sure the Hartke's loop is "series" or set to "100% wet" meaning 100% of the signal is going through the loop with no splitting or mixing.

One simple suggestion is to make sure that your EQ and compressor are both actually activated. On the processors, there should be a button that says something to the effect of "In/Out." Make sure that they are both set to In. That means that they're actually working.
