My Unique Tone...help a noob!

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm taking my long due dive into tone-obsession. I want a Steve Harris Powerslave tone and I'd like a dirty tone most JUST LIKE THIS
Low mid icy crunch - YouTube
The grind and grit with a low mid bump and treble boost.

My current setup consists of a Schecter Stiletto Custom 4 with a 2 band eq, a TC Electr. BG500, and no pedals.
My pedal plan is;

bass>Radial tech mix_in loop- EHX White finger Comp, MXR 10 band eq, Ashdown JLO Hyperdrive, Ashdown Chorus_>Volume pedal>amp

Any suggestions for both tones??? OPINIONS?

With the J-Lo Hyperdrive in tow this will be easy to get. The thing to remember is to use your gain judiciously and midrange is your friend in this case. The Warwick in that video is a very midrange prominent tone to begin with. If your Schecter is a 2 band EQ, I'd start with that by keeping your Bass flat (center detent) and adding a very slight kick to your treble, but not too much.

I had the Lomenzo and the greatest thing about it is that you can pretty much hone in on what frequency band you overdrive. I'd set the "Q" switch to up position and the Frequency control to about 1K (12:30 -1:00 position), set the gain, and blend from there.

I hope this helps.

I've never been to much of a compression guy myself, but the rule of thumb is always "less is more". You just want to be careful not to squash the living hell out of your natural bass tone unless, of course, you're an abusive player by nature. The whole point of compression is to even out and focus your dynamic range, after all.

Not necessarily. The main thing is the overdrive and the focus on the midrange frequency. I've always found no personal use for compression myself...and you'd think I would with a pair of deformed hands and all. Try using it, though. Varying results for various players and all. The only time I've ever used compression is in studio recording and I don't remember them using any compression on me when I did a couple of tracks on Sleeping Giant's debut years ago.

To be honest with you, I think it's doable just with the right amp set flat, the J-Lo, and the bass. Try it first, though.
