How do I make that bass sound with my bass? Starts at around :40 seconds. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Usually a link to a youtube clip, or a clip of the actual music helps. You can't expect people to go searching online for a rap song made in 1990 so that they can find an effect sound for you.

That is definatly a patch on a keyboard of a bass. You MIGHT be able to get somthing like that with a synth pedal, but I doubt you could get it exactly.

Now, I've written a snide remark or two in my day, but I'm not sure that one was necessary. It took me less time to find this tune on youtube than it probably did for you to write that.

On to the question at hand: it's a synth, not a bass. I've never hear a filter or synth pedal that sounded like that. It is an FM synth sound with a couple of voices in unison with slight detuning, so you could try a ring mod into a chorus, then maybe a filter. But you need to keep all three of these effects very light. Very little resonance on the filter, mix in just a little ring mod and very shallow chorus.

Or just use a cheap keyboard. That would be how I would do it. If you're into playing hip hop basslines, a small synth would be a great investment.

You're probably right. It wasn't necessary. I apologize.

Now the next time I ask for some information regarding an effect, please don't be 1 of the 6 guys to tell me that I should've searched first...

It's the good old Seinfeld sound, slap bass patch on 80s keyboard.

Damn. I don't have any real use for the tone other than just wanting to have it on hand. So it's no big deal that it wouldn't be easy to achieve. So buying a keyboard would just be a waste. I've actually been asked to play bass for some rap before. I was thinking about buying a synth pedal then too. But I got something good enough with a Blowtorch, MXR flanger and the sub-harmonic thing on my amp. Thanks for the help bro.

Yeah, it's no big deal that I can't get the sound, not real use for it.

How delightfully post-modern.

I kinda feel like a candy ass whiteboy though after realizing that most of my favorite cuts were apparently constructed to be radio friendly since their ECR content was at 0%.
