As a rookie bass player of about 8 months, I am thinking of purchasing my first effects pedal. What should be my first pedal? I was thinking the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe.

Well, it really depends on your taste in music, and what you feel will flavor your music they way you want it to. If you do a search, you'll find lots of threads about first effects pedals, chains and all that. I, like many other TB'ers will recommend a Multi-Effects unit to start off with so you can sample a little bit of everything and find out what you really like. Check musicians friend, guitar center, and even the TB classifieds and you'll find some great deals on multi-effects.

Cheers and welcome to the community!

oh yeah, it also helps to know your budget, and what kind of gear your playing on so we can recommend something proper

There are some people that will say if you don't know what you want to achieve with effects then don't bother, it's a waste of money.

I on the other hans think the only real way to discover what different effects do it to try them. And the best way to do this is with a low end multi effect unit. I dare say most of us in this forum did exactly the same thing.

The lucky thing for you is, even the cheapest multi units these days are vastly better than they were only 10 years ago. If I were you I'd look at something like the Korg AX3B or the Zoom B2 or B1.

I'd suggest being sure everything else is settled *before* jumping into the effects pedals. Meaning, mostly, your amp. Depending on what you have now, it might be a better investment to upgrade your amp before spending on accessories.
