Need a filter for this song- preferably small, my pedalboard's running out of space.

I've been putting off getting an envelope filter for damn long, especially since my band is mainly doing rock covers, but now that my band wants to do this song that definitely needs a filter.

The bass part at 0:20

It doesn't really sound like the filters I've tried so far, or at least not like what I remember of them- tried the Q-Tron, bassballs and modtone, although I didn't mess around much with them.

Any suggestions what I should be looking out for? I've yet to find the right one... or maybe it's just something about setting the EQ settings to what I need. I have very little filter experience.

Also, my board is almost completely full. I'm sure I can squeeze a tiny bit more space out if I do some massive repositioning and changing the power supply, but I can't add any large pedals onto the board. So stuff like the Mutron or Barge Concepts is definitely out.

Please do suggest! Thanks!

Sounds a bit like the filter is both envelope-controlled and expression-pedal controlled. If that's right, then it is the anti-small.

If small size is more of a priority than matching that tone exactly, then I happen to know where there's a Guyatone BR2 FS...

Sounded like a Meatball to me, so maybe look at the Robot Factory Meatwad or the 3Leaf Groove Regulator, depending on whether you need expression control or not.

But if it's just for an intro on a cover tune you're doing, who cares, just get whatever filter is cheapest.

Bongomania- That could probably be why the filter sounded a bit different. If that's the case, I could probably just grab my guitarist's wah for this song. Thanks!

I'm staying the hell away from Guyatone xP thanks for the offer though, good luck with your sale!

kevteop- I was thinking this is a good excuse to finally get down to getting a nice filter that I could use permanently. I haven't been doing enough filtered stuff to justify getting a filter, but it would be nice to have one when I need it. Haven't tried those two (haven't seen them in shops yet!), maybe I'll specifically try to hunt them down.

Kinda sounds to me like Trem > Filter. Or some other kind of modulation. Really mild phaser?

I've to admit I didn't know those existed until you pointed it out. I'm pretty interested in it now though.

I have to give a big +1 to the MXR M82 Bass Envelope Filter idea. I just picked one up after a fairly long search for a pedalboard-based Filter unit, as my SWR Mini Mo' "Bassynth" Envelope Filter-and-then-some effect has been one of the high-water marks to my ears and I was looking to find a reasonably priced pedal (under $200, I couldn't justify more without a steady current gig) that could approximate its tone... and yes, I somewhat regret selling my Deep Impact, even though it and my Bass Whammy funded the majority of my beloved Mini Mo'. I'd argue circular reasoning, that I didn't think I'd be going back to pedals or at least pedals that the Mo had covered, but my desire for a "B-Rig"/Secondary Preamp and thus a decently-equipped pedalboard made that a moot point.

Check out these two great videos that I believe really show off the positives of the M82 - Bryan Beller of Dethklok, Steve Vai, & Mike Keneally and Uriah Duffy of Whitesnake, Toni Tony Tone, & Lyrics Born. Two great players with very different styles but still sound amazing through the MXR!

Man, that pedal sounds great. Looks like I've another contender on the GAS list now!
