Need help with assembling chain of Effects

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

So this is what i got so far - Bass itself (Yamaha RBX374), and a 15inch combo from Yorkville XM100.

All I need if 2 - 3 different presets for playing small venues, (we play covers, so presets would really help).

First of all - the amp has guitar input (low and high), and FX loop in and out, i kind of have an idea, that with FX loop lets you bypass the preamp, but not too sure which pedals to use with it... yet.

So what I was thinking about getting so far is - Tuner (BOSS), Tech 21 Bass Driver DI (3 preset DI EQ), and some other timing effect ... and or maybe a distortion pedal.

So please help me better understand how to better arrange those pedals on the board / what is the diff between FX loop vs direct input .. and will Tech 21 suffice for preset switching..

I know this is a lot of questions, but any help is greatly appreciated, we all started somewhere.. ; )

Thanks!

There aren't any "rules" and what you should go with is what sounds best to you. That said FX loops are designed for line level (IE Rackmount gear) which stompboxes normally aren't. I'd go instrument level with any stompboxes you acquire.

Again nothing set in stone but Tuner-->Disto--->timing and If you are using the BDDI for the DI I'd put it last so the house gets a wet (effected) signal.

Think of it in this way: would you want to have your distortion in your delay? probably. would you want to have your distortion and delay in the mains? probably. Do you want your delay in your tuner? probably not. I would go with what cptn. warwick said as a starting point. The confusion is when you get things like overdrives and fuzzes and the like. Do you want the overdrive before or after the fuzz? only you can decide.

Thanks for the replies, that def helps!

And just a quick one, for the ones who use BDDI, in our opinion, how does the "drive" knob change overall sound?
