Need help with Distortion sounds

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, so I know there are like a hundred post on Distortion and Fuzz but I can't find what i'm looking for in old posts. I use active basses through an ampeg SVT CL w/2x15 cab (check sig). I wanna push the head to more of a mellow fuzz than overdrive without being at max volume. I was thinking of running a Fuzz box to help push the tubes ala a bunch of Guitar players. I have a russian Muff but it gets to heavy/doom for just straight hard rock. I want a good creamy sound and don't want to take away from the tubes. Maybe like a low end gain pedal. I don't wanna lose clarity in the notes just more warmth and growl. Any opinions on what to try?

For my more creamy fuzz, I use an Electronix messdrive hybrid plus in vintage mode. If you post vids/clips of the sound your looking for or a bassist with a similar tone to what your after well be able to help more.

Fuzz Hugger Great Wall. A fuzz so nice I bought it twice
It will go from a little grit to ROAR, you never get lost, has lots of low mids unlike a muff, supper thick and chewy is the best overall description I can give.

I like the Great Wall a lot. Its pretty close. Has anyone tried the Algal Bloom fuzz on bass. it sounds like it might cut a little better but keep the low end and mids. All I can find are guitar samples of it.

No actually not. I just like the gear. I want a Fuzz sound that blends well in the mix. Its prob the opposite of Cliff's Fuzz sound actually

Just ask over in ILF's HG forum for a clip. Usually there is someone willing to make a clip of anything over there if you ask.

Sounds like you want an overdrive rather than a fuzz - I say Xotic BB Preamp.

The dod 250 overdrive pedal would be a good choice. this pedal delivers warm overdrive sounds on bass.

HBE Hematoma....

You can use the booster to boost your signal, or the Overdrive to get gritty, but clear tone... You would be surprised what tones you can get.

Maybe for you. Personally I hate that pedal, too farty for me. Most dirty boosters get in that general area of clipping, some better sounding to ones ear then others, some with more control then others, the very best I have ever tried is the Dirty Chan Clean Chan by Mellowtone but it has no controls [on the out side of the pedal.
