Need input re: order of my effects chain

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm putting together my pedalboard and would like some suggestions regarding the order of the effects pedals. I've tried to review some of the threads on this topic for some guidance and thought this might be a good starting point:
Bass-->MXR Octave Deluxe-->VT Bass-->Aguilar TLC Compressor-->Boss Bass Chorus-->Amp. Thoughts?

The chain you described is how I'd set it up.

The best thing to do is experiment, you may find that the octave pedal tracks better with the compressor before it.

I've learnt a lot about compression lately from putting it in different positions in my signal chain, and testing what works best.

My advice would be to only put pedals with large signal peaks before the compressor.
You may want to include the octave pedal before the comp, as it gets a bit dynamic at times, but this would really depend on how you set it i spose.

Re the VT, i put my comp before it (EBS Multicomp). I cant see the point in having a tone shaping pedal like a VT that you squash/limit/tame with a compressor. Not my bag anyway. If you set your levels right on the VT you shouldnt need any compression after it. Vt is a beast that should be let out of it's cage!

Bass chorus: I haven't used this pedal for a while, so i'm going to say again that if it dont need taming (which it doesnt) then i'd recommend it after the compressor.

These are only my opinions and not gospel, i hope they help.

When I put my compressor before the VT I get heaps of hiss when I'm not playing. It's just a cheap Hofner (I've heard it's the same as belcat). Both pedals are quiet on their own but very noisy in combination.

My old lmb 3 used to hiss a bit when in conjunction with other effects (like the odb3).
The EBS Multicomp doesnt hiss or make any noise at all - none that i can hear and i play frickin loud too in a rock 5 piece...

You may wanna consider getting a new compressor if that one is causing you to not use other effects, especially a gem like the VT

I'd go :

BASS > Comp > VT > Chorus > Octave > AMP.

But that's just me. There are no real rules, just what sounds better and generates less noise. Best thing to do is take a week off work, set everything up in the living room and experiment with every possible combination.

I don't know about the MXR octaver, but my EBS Octabass needs to be first in line or else the tracking will fail. I also use the EBS Multicomp and I have it last in line, after the Sansamp BDDI. Mostly due avoided volumespikes from fuzz and filter pedals. Still have lots of dynamics.

This is my setup:

- Korg Pitchblack tuner
- Zvex Wooly Mammoth
- EBS Octabass
- Digitech Bass Synth Wah
- EHX MicroPOG
- EHX Bass Big Muff
- EBS Multidrive
- Sansamp BDDI
- EBS Multicomp

The setup that you (the OP, that is) recommended at first seems pretty good.
