Need a LIGHT bass overdrive?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi.

I'm looking for a nice bass overdrive that is very mild, slightly edgy, and warm. Something suitable for punk. A good example of what I'm looking for is the bass on Nice Guys Finish Last by Green Day.

I don't really want boutique, and I sorta need it cheap.

I also own a Digitech BP80, Boss DS-1, and Russian Big Muff Pi, but I can't find any good settings. They're all too much.

Thanks

I use the BOSS ODB-3, and while many people heckle it because of it's really hot distortion, I find at certain settings you can get it just perfect.

Ever heard of the Barber LTD SR? From what information I've gathered, it seems to fit the bill.

Also, check out the Zvex Distortron. On the lower gain settings, it sounds quite nice on bass.

What's your budget? the LTD SR is around $125 and the Distortron is around $150. although you can find the Distortron around $125 ish used.

Invest in a loop blender.

I checked out the Barber LTD SR. Sounds great on guitar, but how on bass...?

And also, what's a loop blender??

A loop blender is basically an effects loop pedal that allows you to control how much wet signal to mix in with the dry signal.

The key to a "light" overdrive is to find one that has a mostly dry signal.

The Big Muff Pi can do it.

It's a pedal that controls the amount of wet/dry signal from your effect loop with a knob.

I second the ODB-3. I play punk/ska/hardcore (Rise Against, Green Day, Less Than Jake) and you can dial in a perfect "crispy" overdrive. If you get the pedal, PM me and I'll send you my EQ settings to get that tone.

Nice Guys Finish Last sounds like straight tone to me, maybe a little bit of tube push. I could be wrong. But my ODB-3 gives me a nice Rise Against tone (think Blood to Bleed intro).

Digitech Bad Monkey! Yes it is technically a guitar pedal but it works great for bass too! Nice warm overdrive tone without being dirty. It is very cheap, under $50 new and around $30 used.

I'm assuming. According to http://rockstarguitarsandrigs.blogsp...episode-6.html

Mike Dirnt (bassist of Green Day) uses Mesa amps.

Also, maybe you guys could figure out if the SansAmp would work, I can't say, I've never heard one in person. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAj7DcSQeWY

^The song performed live around the time of its release.

Sansamp or VT bass, IMO would be perfect for the OP's application.

There is an Ampeg SVT setting on my Digitech multi effects, should I use that?

Actually, if you could find a tube based pedal like the EBS Valve Drive or Mesa Bottle Rocket, used... that would get you the closet to punk rock levels of overdrive.

I was actually going to bring up the Electric Brown by Devi Ever. The Karaoke Party was my second choice. It's good to hear that it's a good box to have around!
