Need a new pedal board... Thinking Funk & Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Just looking for some recommendations for a nice funk & jazz board to give me a wider range of sound.

One thing I'd definitely love to get is that funk "quack" that I hear from so many great artists. Most well known example would be 21st Century by RHCP, but I know I've heard Victor Wooten with the same patch.

In general, I want something to make my bass punch better for the funk, and glide better for the jazz. Price is not a limit here (as long as it's not one pedal over $200 or something like that...) so any and all recommendations are welcome.

The "quack" you are referring to is from an envelope filter. There are tons of different options, at loads of different prices. The most popular ones around here are: Electro-Harmonix qtron (any model), digitech bass synth wah (on the cheap), DOD fx25 (the old one), and loads more.

Doesn't Flea use a Dunlop Bass wah 105Q ??? or DID!!?????
this is just an envelope filter that YOU control with the pedal. Ones without pedals, like BASS BALLS by EHX etc, u simply turn on via footswitch & how hard U pluck string(attack) controls the "quack"-as do controls-knobs...I play a lotta funk... but mainly old school, larry Graham, Parliament....etc........ & use a BAssballs, sometimes a 105Q bass wah, a big Muff(Fuzz) Russian version-seems better for bass- sometimes a Digitech Bass synth Wah.

Flea did use a 105Q but that was a while ago now One Hot Minute if I remember correctly. Coffee Shop from 2:07 to 2:14 seems like a manual wah sweep on the bass.

Flea has been using a Q-Tron live for a while now, and I think that's the effect on 21st Century. The Q-Tron and Q-Tron Plus give you more control over your sound than most other envelope filters.

My opinion:
Q-Tron for the "quack"
GEB-7 or MXR 10 band for switching between funk and jazz.

Mr. Mustache -- welcome to TB. What's your current setup?

Also, are you thinking funk or Chili Peppers? There is a difference. Anyway, octavers, fuzzes and phasers can all get super funky, but you want a good envelope filter in there. So far this has only covered the easy-to-get ones, so do a search for more interesting and coveted pedals.

What kind of jazz are you gonna play? When I think jazz I think chops, not effects usually, but it depends on style.
