Need pedal order thoughts

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a general idea where pedals go in relation to each other, but at the same time, when packing a bunch, getting them exactly right becomes somewhat difficult. Hopefully I can get a bit of feedback to help optimize this. I bought a Carbon Copy today and have to take apart the board anyways, so I might as well fix the order while I'm at it.

Here's what I have so far in chain order:
1.) Boss OC-2 (Octave)
2.) Submarine Designer (Preamp)
3.) Way Huge Pork Loin (OD)
4.) Woolly Mammoth (Gated Fuzz)
5.) Supercollider (Muff Fuzz)
6.) Messdrive (Synthy Fuzz)
7.) Groove Regulator (Envalope Filter)
8.) Boss BF-3 (Flanger)
9.) Maxon CS9 Pro (Chorus)
10.) Maxon CP9 Pro (Compressor)

with Carbon Copy definately going at the end somewhere.

I've wondered about a few pedals specifically. I'm 100% unsure where to stick the submarine, where is the best place to stick the preamp. The same can also be said of the compressor. I'd like it near the end for a more smooth volume level, but I'm also worried this may muddy the tone from the modulation and especially from the new analog delay. The groove regulator may also be best served earlier in the chain. Like I said, its relatively close, but a few pedals still may need a better spot.

Thanks for any help.

i usually go compressor first, preamp last.

the rest, really, is up to what you want to sound like. usually Filter -> Fuzz -> Octaver is the niceness. i like Fuzz after Filter a lot too though, so if i have multiple fuzzes on board, and...... who doesn't?....... i like one before and one after.

good stuff!

i think you have it pretty close to optimal. not sure about the pre, i'm sure you've tried it before & after the octave & put the octave first for a reason.

i do think the envelope filter is better before anything that will affect the dynamics (such as fuzz or overdrive) -- ok, not necessarily better, just way different in one spot than the other.

most fuzz & overdrive circuits will compress the dynamic range of the signal (i.e. softly played notes come out almost as loud as harder notes) and the envelope filter will respond in just about the same way to each. if the envelope filter is first, it will react more to the dynamics of your playing.

that's a lot of fuzz!

+1

My thoughts almost exactly. The only difference is that I sub the word "overdrive" instead of "fuzz."

So after taking everyone's suggestions, how's this rearrange look?

1.) Maxon CP9 Pro (Compressor)
2.) Boss OC-2 (Octave)
3.) Woolly Mammoth (Gated Fuzz)
4.) Groove Regulator (Envalope Filter)
Maybe in GR effect loop -> 5.) Messdrive (Synthy Fuzz)
6.) Supercollider (Muff Fuzz)
7.) Way Huge Pork Loin (OD)
8.) Boss BF-3 (Flanger)
9.) Maxon CS9 Pro (Chorus)
10.) Carbon Copy (Delay)
11.) Submarine Designer (Preamp)

again, try 'em out to see what works for you, but Filter -> Fuzz -> Octave is the standard for a reason. USUALLY gets you closest to a synth sound.

looks good though!

I was under the impression that the standard was octave first and filter last. If I have it backwards, that could also be why I've yet to find a holy grail synth sound yet, lol.

Again, thanks for the assistance.
