Need some cable help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody,

I think this is the best forums for this, as it primarily relates to an effect issue.

I'm running a GK 1001 RB-II through 2 4x10 cabs

I recently got an older Yamaha SPX-90 digital effects unit and I need to get some high quality cables to run the send/receive from the amp effects loop to it. Using cheapo cables I had laying around, I get a LOT of noise if I run the cable inside my rack bag between the effects unit (top space of 4 space rack) and my amp (bottom 2 spaces of rack).

I suspect part of the problem is that the effects unit has in/outs on the back and my amp has them on the front so it has to cross over. I'm not surprised that running a cable on top of the amp (and obviously the transformer, etc) generates noise, and if I move the cable around the noise gets more or less depending on where. It reduces a lot if I run the cable outside the rack but that isn't ideal as I want to leave everything connected most of the time. My best solution I can think of is to get some good shielded cables to reduce the noise as best I can.

My issue is that I can't find good monster instrument cables in 3 foot lengths with right angle plugs on one end (for the front of the amp so I can still close the front with it connected. Are there good alternatives to Monster that might come in the lengths and connector types I want? Or are the performer 500 Monster cables that I can find actually decent? The reviews are a bit all over the place on those.

Don't ever give Monster Cables your money,...they are the models for corporate bullying and shady marketing tactics.

I've heard some people use Monster Cables for a while and when they switch back to a different brand they are wonder why the plugs are fitting loosely in the jacks. Apparently Monster uses a slightly larger plug therefore slutifying their gear's I/O jacks. This is all hearsay so take it with a grain of salt.

Caveat: I just use what I can source at the local shops. I have noise,...but I blame ill power supplies on my pedalboards

If you are handy with a soldering iron Canare and Mogami seem to carry a good reputation,...along with Switchcraft and Neutrik plugs.

SPX 90... High quality cables...

Hmmmm

Given how noisy an SPX90 is, you'd be throwing your money away to stress. Just get decent short cables - besides, the hype about "deluxe" cables is nothing but a pack of lies.

That could very well be is that the SPX90 will be noisy anyways since it is older.

I only asked the question because the noise seemed to lessen when I used my monster cable instead of the cheap one in the loop. The noise isn't really noticeable when playing anyways, just in between songs. And my GK's mute doesn't mute the effects loop, just the input. Maybe I should just run the SPX-90 ahead of the input instead of in the effects loop?

I'm sure much of it is hype, but I promise you there is a difference between say a Mogami, or Zaolla and a Planet Waves or some other crappy cable. I'm sure there are cheaper ways to get or make a good cable than Mogami or Zaolla, but I went with Mogami Gold and it eliminated the noise and it is guaranteed forever so I'm happy.

I wouldn't buy a Monster because I guess I've bought into the theory of the expanded jack size wallowing out the inputs.

Oh, looks like you just wanted right angle on one end. You'll also need some of these:

Thanks for the replies! I think I'll go with the Mogami gold cables and see how that goes. Cheaper than Monster and I can get the sizes I need, and lifetime warranty.

Are the cheap cables instrument cables or speaker cables?

As far as hear say goes, I've heard that Monster no longer uses the 'larger then 1/4" jacks". I've used Monster for years and regularly switch between Monster, Planet Waves and Whirlwind 1/4 inches and have never had a loose jack in any of my basses, pedals, amps, or other gear.

Get something with a Lifetime warranty. That's all that matters. Monster or not.
