Need a subtle OD/Distortion

Sign in to disble this ad
So iv got my Bass Big Muff for my really fuzzed out sounds, and now im looking for a more subtle OD or Drive to just add some warmth and dirt and emphasise my basslines.

The three they have at my local music store are:
Digitech Bass Driver
Boss ODB-3
EHX Nano Muff OD

Mostly curious about the nano muff seeing its cheap and simple and could it just give me what im looking for?

EDIT: http://derringers.com.au/ thats where i'll be going to try some stuff out so if anyone can suggest something they have there.. Id love you forever (:

The regular programmable sansamp sounds great too.. U can set and recall a preset for sustain, one for heavier dirt... and one clean... Very useful and doesn't kill low end.
A friend uses the Aguilar overdrive ( Agro )
he likes it,
I like to use an old DOD overdrive 250 pedal in the studio, but I've tried ones that sucked, others that were great..there were various models, and it has to be in good shape.
I suggest any sansamp product, though I prefer the programmable.

The nano muff is a nice little od if you have a passive bass. There's a thread with sound samples courtesy of Mark Olsen.

I have played all three, the Nano Muff is still on my board, between 9 o'clock and 11 o'clock, its a grittier overdrive, but still retains a lot of warm and a surprising amount of lows. I liked the Digitech unit a lot as well, it was quite versatile. The Boss unit is also of my board, but I use it more for the 2 band EQ than anything else, the distortion from it is just to fizzy and brittle for my tastes, but with the blend kept around 7 o'clock and the gain at 9 o'clock, it warms your tone up a bit, and drives it nicely when you dig in.

All that said, I'd go with either the Digitech or the Nano Muff

pork loin, it has a blend so you can keep your lows. I love mine.

Good Luck!

I'm a bit wary of blends. Some actually blend your tone but some seem to layer the clean on top of the dirty and I don't much care for that.

I use the Fulltone Mosfet Bass Overdrive.
I set the tone to be a light vintage od, and then set the boost to be an over the top overdrive so I have both subtle and 'in your face' going in the same pedal.

+1 on a sansamp BDDI or VT. I also recently heard someone get great results from the MXR bass D.I.+

The ODB-3 is anything but subtle. It's a nasally, trashy sound.

I bought a Keeley-modded Boss Blues Driver a few years back, and I have to say it is my favorite OD/Distortion pedal. It can do both subtle AND very distorted, which makes it pretty versatile. The Keeley mod basically makes it achieve more low-end to it (thus better for bass guitars than non modded) - but the regular blues driver is also pretty good. Check it out.

What is your price range? The units you mentioned aren't going to give you what you want.

The digitech bass driver can deliver warm overdrive sounds, but it's not exacly subtle. if you want a natural overdrive sound, the voodoo lab sparkle drive would be a good choice.

Iv only got just over $200 AUD, seeing iv just bought a muff and chorus. So i need something in my budget that can just give me kinda a growl and just add some dirt to my sound.

At your price range and from what your lookin for, a tech 21 sansamp oxford pedal might be right up your alley. it has a smooth growling distorted sound. the tech 21 character series has a line of great sounding pedals that also sounds awesome on bass. I personally dig the oxford. this pedal sounds smooth and heavy on bass.
