Need To Warm Up SWR, Ideas?

Hey guys--

Picked up an SWR Black Beauty. Looking to warm the sound up (not necessarily distortion). I've listed to John Paul Jones live sound with "Them Crooked Vultures:"

He's using SWR and his bass is equipped EMG 35 pickups, 2 band EQ.

So, I'd like to replicate that EMG sound with an outboard effects/pedal.

Any ideas?

Just put your preamp gain at around 1 or 3 o'clock and EQ accordingly.

SWR - though not a grindy amp - should have enough warmth for a big fat clean tone.

maybe a pre-amp pedal that has a "vibe" like the SABDDI. I do love the sound of my LMII by itself, but adding that pedal (I don't use it for distortion) just added a different and equally cool "vibe" to the amp.

I saw TCV on Austin City Limits last night and his tone was pretty aggressive but not overly distorted.

Get that tube to break up and keep your attack on point and you should be fine.

A sansamp would get you there in a heartbeat, but if you really drive your gear it should be fine and handle it all the same.

Don't know what an SWR Balck Beauty is but do now the ONLY thing that warmed up my SM400 was an old Tungsol 12AX7 preamp tube; hated that amp until this tube changed everything (did not have as good an experience with NOS Sylvanias or GE's with this head)
