Need your thoughts about my fuzz pedal

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, i got a friend of mine in the process of making me a fuzz pedal.
Ii will be a non-muffish, creamy fuzz, with not many tonal options (dont think i need an extra mids knob for example, unless you convince me otherwise) other than volume/dirt/blend and possibly a tone knob.

Thing is that, my friend gave me a plethora of options to include in the creation of the pedal and im kinda lost.
From the materials and the box to the sound and the knobs and whatever =)

Since im decided on pretty much everything else, i would need your opinion on what to include extra on the pedal.

Maybe a feedback or an extra tone knob or overdrive?
Anything is fine.

Post your thoughts and explain how it would affect the result or how it would fit in the heavy rock/psychedelic/doom sound im mainly interested in.

Cheer

in my opinion, when it comes to fuzz, the mid control knob is a must. unless your sure it wont have scooped mids. i'm sure it doesn't cost much or take much time to add a mid control knob, seeing as its your friend building it. most of my problems with past fuzz pedals have been related to getting lost in a live mix, which i usually attribute to lack of mids. hope it turns out great for you.

Yeah, agreed, get the mid knob.
Other than that, standard stuff like true bypass, distortion control etc.

You have to post pics and samples when it's done!

I agree about having the option to boost the mids. Another feature I like is the ability to roll off some highs. Aside from that, all the options your friend is offering are either cosmetic or trivial, so don't worry about it. For cosmetics, either show him a picture of a pedal that you think is attractive, or just tell him to surprise you. For internal options, you can either send him a Youtube or MP3 clip of the fuzz sound you like, or... tell him to surprise you. Fuzz sounds are so subjective that picking components is best left to somebody who knows exactly what does what, or who likes taking a gamble.

I'm still waiting for a distortionor fuzz or OD pedal to come along that just has an on/off and "level of distortion" button.
Something that does not increase/change the volume when turned on.

...or is there esomething outhere like that?
... something that sounds good too and not as muddy as some?

"Tone" knob, possibly a high cut switch, and I think that an expression pedal jack would be cool, either as a tone control or possibly for a blend.

Was also thinking about the mids knob.
And yeah its very possible and easy as he told me (the mids).

About the sound of the pedal, it's already based on another i really like and have the schematics for.
He made another in the past for bass, i listened to some clips, i like it a lot.

And last but not least, he will "carve/paint" a picture i sent him.
Don't think it can get more personal than that.

When i get it of course ill get a sound clip or two, or maybe i can post the ones he sent me.

I know you mentioned that there's a blend knob. From experience, I think a clean volume and a dirty volume work much better.
