New to compressors and filters

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm building a pedal board... and I have a few questions.

I understand how a compressor works, more or less, but there's so many of them... Which to buy? So, in your opinion, what would be a good first compressor? Something I can picked up used for $100 or less (hopefully), is easy to use, understand, etc.

Second, filters? Would someone mind explaining to me what an "envelope filter" does and why I might possibly want one? And then, same question as the compressor.

Thanks.

This is what an envelope filter does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2uuiUlDShc

It is like a wah wah but instead of controlling the filter with your foot it reacts on the guitar volume so it opens up when you play a note.
