New EHX Nano Muff Overdrive Fuzz Soundclips

Sign in to disble this ad
I by chance have a couple new clips of this lying around so I thought I'd put them in a thread so people could check them out/find them in searches. Here's with my SG Bass, neck pickup first, then both pickups, with some Carbon Copy analog delay:

And by itself, then with the Wilson Effects custom wah of mine partway through:

The Nano Muff really excels at psychedelia and blues rock. There's no gain knob so you control the distortion with your volume knob on your guitar. For the clip above the Nano Muff is on the entire time, but you can be all the way clean or all the way distorted just by turning your volume knob a little bit.

For the price I definitely recommend this pedal. For what it costs, it can add a lot to your sonic arsenal, and it's small enough to toss into a gig bag and bring along anywhere you go, and simple enough to not have to worry about.

Good stuff as always Mark. Is this mic'ed up through the Marshall?

Yup, the Marshall is set really low on the volume, not even on one (the bass doesn't really come in until you get it on two, but once you do it's a really thick amp), the tone is maxed, and I'm using the bass channel only. At that setting it's quite transparent and completely clean.

For all these clips the tone knob on my SG Bass is maxed, and the volume is too unless I've said otherwise (the third clip the volume floats between maybe 7 and 10).

Volume on the Nano Muff is less than half so it's not pushing the amp or anything (not that it could, it only has a two stage preamp and doesn't get into power tube saturation until it is very loud).

Hold on a minute. This sounds awesome. How well does low end hold up?

This is one of those pedals that's so simple, you don't lose the low end, you just gain the harmonics of the fuzz (if you set it like I like to with the volume at about noon). And the fuzz compresses so the peaks don't get much higher, you just sound bigger.

It's the perfect tool for kicking on any time you want to get bigger/more intense for a chorus or a guitar solo, or any time you just need something extra to cut through (the pedal can add a lot of midrange without sacrificing low end).

Here's how it sounds off and then on, first with the neck pickup of my SG Bass, then with a both pickups:

and here's a picture of what that looks like in audacity:

So you can see the peaks aren't much higher, but the sound is compressed and fuzzed making it overall just bigger. Great for choruses or guitar solos where you need to fill space or any time you just need "more".

Or if you're like me you can leave the pedal on all the time and control the gain with your volume knob and add "more" when you need it that way. Either way works great, though using your volume knob can make for much more extreme dynamics, great for blues like I play.

Oh one thing I should mention though is that, since the pedal is so sensitive to guitar volume, if you're using a low output guitar you probably won't get nearly as much dirt as I get out of the pedal with my SG, with it's humbuckers. When I used a Nano Muff with my Jazz Bass a long time ago it was more of a mild overdrive than a more full on fuzz.

I have a VM Telebass, the humbucker one, so i think it will get nasty. I will for sure look into this. May just try to make a clone.

I'll bet there's a schematic somewhere, though they are so cheap it'd be just as easy to buy one. I got mine here:

http://www.samedaymusic.com/product--ELHNANOMUFFOD

with 2 day shipping for less than 50$!

I saw them on the bay for about that. I just really want to make a fuzz and this could be a cool start.

I tried making one before and it was just a clean boost for some reason. i couldnt figure out what i did wrong.

Back to the point, I am gonna look up the schematic for this pedal.

A friend of mine had one of these and I really liked it with his J bass, not as much with an active Stingray copy, but I go for a nice warm overdrive rather than the crunchy fuzz. I'm curious how it would sound with my 55-02. Could be very versatile.

Yeah, it is technically a fuzz and not an overdrive as they've re-labeled it, and as a 1969 design it's not very liable to be active friendly, but with my Jazz it gave a nice light overdrive sound.

Let us know how it goes! If you find any decent mods that can be done or anything that would be great too!

It worked fine with the Ray copy, it just had more of a hard edge than with the J. I thought that with the J it sounded kind of like a Tube screamer whereas with the Ray it was more like a Rat or something. I had similar results with the DOD 250.

ok i got an idea. I was looking at the schem and started thinking of a way to drop the gain.

Why not just put a 100k pot at the input so you can roll off the input signal. That would work like rolling off your bass volume without messing up the pedals before it.
