The New MRX Octave Pedal

It's in stores now for around 150.00.

I talked to a sales guy at the store and he just started telling me how much better the BOSS equivelent was?

Anyway I am not as jazzed up about after I saw today, while I did not Demo it, it doesn't look as sharp as it does in catalogs and one of the controls is labeled "Growl" that was the deal closer for me.

I'm "old school" I started playing bass in the 60s, I don't want anything to do with the word "growl". For me and most of my generation of bass players it means nothing.I don't want to "growl".

You likely won't be buying a ton of modern pedals, then. I'd say about 90% of pedals have some stupid labeling like that on them. Still, I wouldn't slag on it without hearing, and I fo' sho' wouldn't listen to a salesman's opinion on the way it sounds.

I think I will buy the EBS Octave pedal, unless it has the term "growl" on it.

Not to derail this thread too much, but I have a question now that someone has brought up the EBS:

I'm thinking about getting an octave pedal, and I want something analog, so I'm pretty sure I'm aiming for either the MXR or the EBS. I already have the Blowtorch and MXR Stereo Chorus, both of which I love, so I've had good luck with MXR and the features on their octave sound pretty cool.
However, the deciding factor for me will be which one will track more than one note at a time better (I mostly play an 8 string). The EBS website claims it tracks chords, but I haven't heard anything in regards to that with the MXR. Thoughts?

the EBS "tracks chords" by identifying the highest note played and applying an octave down to only that note.

Hell, I mean, what are you going to do. I guess I would just get the MXR, cause you already have the Chorus and you like it. Plus the MXR is the new thing. While it doesn't look as happening as I thought it would, who knows the thing might have some "mojo"

But you don't HAVE to use the "Growl" knob. The other knob is "Girth" and my girlfriend says that's more important anyway.

So if a pedal doesn't look as shiny in person and has a knob with a silly name, we should reject it without hearing it? Funny thread.

The growl is merely the word MXR chose to decribe that one voice, which is sort of growly. The other voice, (girth), is quite clean in comparison. Fwiw, I prefer the tone from an Ehx Octave Multiplexer, but the MXR is also quite nice, and takes up very little board space.

Yes, but up, not down-there are times when I play lines mostly on the A or D strings that I would like to get a bit lower than EQ'ng will let me.

That's a pretty cool feature, first I've heard of it.

I'm still trying to decide what to have my friend build first (im seriously lagging) and I found an OC-2 schematic online. I was thinking about trying to incorporate the 'growl&girth' so-to-speak, to give the OC-2 circuit some more tonal options- maybe a lowpass or something, to go from a square to smoother wave? The ability to 'track chords' would be a nice feature as well, I wonder how hard that and/or an octave doubler would be to implement.

I love the Pollyanna; with the 3 available octaves you can get some great tones, but the tracking isn't that great. An OC-2 style octave with the versatility of the Pollyanna would be killer, I just have a feeling that some of the mods I have in mind might affect the OC-2's stable tracking.
