It's called a teasing campaign and it aims at developping awareness, buzz and the interest (gas) for a new product before it's out.
As outlined by this thread, it's highly effective.

Thank you, Mr. Laurent! And might I add that sometimes a company will unveil a prototype to get prerelease feedback at trade shows. Many times, a product goes through changes before the final release. Would you rather have it right, or right now?!

I can say that the OD is killer from the word go, however!

Clever. So instead of just buying it, we inevitably start talking about it while we wait, creating a sort of free advertising. I had never thought about it like that.

I had assumed it had more to do with big companies having a hard time coordinating all the logistics involved in bringing a product to market.

It can be either of those things. Or both. Think about Apple. There's tremendous buzz about their new products for months before they appear. And yet, it's almost never Apple that is the one talking. They're super secretive and almost never talk about products before they are ready to sell. It's everyone else that does it, but they sure do benefit from it in some ways I'm sure. On the other hand, when they first came out with the iPhone, they decided to spill the beans early. Why? Because the FCC required that their phone be a matter of public record some months before it was ready to sell...so they figured might as well tell everyone.

I'm not in business or marketing, but I still think it's pretty fascinating.

And I still am eager to hear the overdrive demos.

Well, in my case I bought another OD while waiting to even hear this one. It'd be pretty easy to sell it if I do like the mxr more but still...easier to stick with what I already got.

What about some places that may actually have decent prices on them?

So with that list I assume MXR is shipping 50 pedals at best for the initial run?

I've done business with both Bass Central and Best Bass Gear over the years and have never had an issue.

Yes. I have been really happy with bassefx.com and musicgearfast.com as well on pedal orders. Both are independently owned and have great stocks of pedals.

You can never go wrong with supporting all the independents like Bass Central, Bass NW, Atlanta Bass Gallery, Bass Club Chicago, Bass Emporium, etc. if we don't support them, we'd all be stuck with the big box only.

Note Bass Emporium is out of biz unfortunately. They are closing out some inventory but the physical store is gone.
