New Overdrive - Blackout Mantra??

Sign in to disble this ad
So, i've been using my flipster for a while as my go-to OD. It was one of my favourite pedals, but now I think I want to try something new, and BigChiefbc's vid of the Blackout Effects Mantra sounded great to me.

Basically I just want to hear if anyone's had any direct experience with it and what its general OD characteristics are and how it might compare to other OD pedals in a similar pricerange (SFT, Pork Loin, Flipster, Fulltone bassdrive, OCD). I've noticed that the Flipster can get a little 'farty' when gain/drive is turned up - now this isnt necessarily a bad thing as its meant to sound like an overdriven Ampeg Portaflex, but i think i want something smoother, a little more 'breathable' and touch sensitive, I dont mind that the Mantra isnt the lowest gain OD around from Bigchiefbc's clip, it can sound pretty doomy too, which I dig.

I play grunge/experimental rock music sometimes it gets a bit shoegaze and post-rock, sometimes we get a little math-y.
I play a MIM 70s RI jazz w/p-bas pickup at the neck. My amp is a LMII going through a Zoot 210 and 115. I always have my VTbass on.

Bigchiefbc's clean tone on the vid isnt really anything like mine, although it sounds great - and I think that in that vid, the mantra nails the Tim Commerford tone. I mainly use a passive bass but with SD Basslines p and j pickups so I think they'll be pretty hot - I am looking for an OD at the end of the day, it dont really want to drive it too far into Fuzz/Distortion territory.
The clips on the Blackout website werent that great to my ears so i'd really like a few more opinions.

yeah the graphics are pretty awesome, got some serious mojo going on. Might just have to pull the trigger.
