New To Pedalboards - how to?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have the following effects and am looking for advice on how to sequence them: EXH Stereo Clone Theory, Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, Boss BF-3 Flanger, MXR Blowtorch, Tech 21 VT-Bass, and an EBS Multicomp. Maybe even some of these don't go together??

Thanks

Accepted wisdom: Compression -> Distortions -> Modulations

But just use whatever order sounds best to you.

experimentation is always fun, so try some other combination out.

the standard would be: Bass -> MultiComp -> the distortions -> flanger -> Clone theory

would love to hear where to add in an envelope filter (EBS Bassiq) and octaver (EBS Octabass).

Both under modulations so normally you go last in the chain (or at least, after the compressor).

That said, I've sometimes found that if I set the compressor high (limiter kind of setting) I have a hard time triggering the "wah" in the envelope filter. Not usually a problem as I usually don't compress my sound that much, but I've encountered that before. When that happens I usually flip and put the envelope filter before the compressor.

Octabass absolutely first. BassIQ either after the Octabass or after the distortions.

After distortion is my preference for filters, but that really only works if you've got low-gain distortion. Once you get into fuzz territory any envelope-following pedal that goes after them isn't going to have much of a dynamic envelope left to play with.

That's wher pedals like the Q-Tron+ and the Meatball (and its clones) come into their element - you can put the dirt pedals / compressors / whatever in their FX loop and still use the clean signal for the envelope information. The ideal setup IMHO with a filter is Tracking Pedals (Octabass) -> Filter -> Filter's Loop (Compression -> Dirt) -> Modulation.

I usually put my compressor last in the chain, right before my amp to level things out especially from volume spikes with various filters, distortions, overdrives, etc.

Yeah that's a good idea if you have a very peaky filter. I don't use compression but I do have a limiter last in my chain because I tend to play with very resonant filters and feedback and stuff.
