New pitch to MIDI systems.

A very good idea ; a laser wich check what note is played by calculating the distance. The device would be installed near the bridge.

Still a prototype but a very good idea!

Latency is said to be under 1ms no matter what's the pitch.
Is our wait over ?

I don't see how it tunes. What if you played in Drop D? or Eb standard?

You wouldn't even need to retune the bass - you just transpose the MIDI notes. It just reads where your fingers are on the fretboard.

But if layering clean and synth bass, and they are a major 9th apart as in this case, you'd get fired/make the patrons very angry unless you are in a math rock band or Captain Beefheart tribute group...

You still could retune the bass, just as far as the pitch-to-MIDI is concerned, it's not necessary.

Only if you like playing out of tune with yourself.

You do realize I just said that you can retune the bass to match the MIDI transposition, right?

The bass, itself, provides a starting point. Most synths these days can be easily transposed in any direction and any interval (i.e., octave, fifth, unison, etc.). Some can be set to all sorts of tunings - just, mean, pythagorean, etc. Most are able to have the Pitch Bend set to any interval as well or turn the Pitch Bend off and the synth will play 'perfectly' in tune to whatever tuning is selected.

I personally would acquire this system ASAP, if it really works. Currently I use a GK-3 on the melody side of my Chapman Stick, with very good results. I also use the Sonuus B2M to play my Moog Taurus III via any of my basses (bass guitars - fretted/fretless, EUB, Stick Bass or keyboard controller). The B2m is a but touchy but I am getting pretty good results depending what I play and how the synth is set up. I had low expectations from this device.

Or if it existed. So far it seems they only have illustrations of their idea and some patents relating to parts of it.

The idea is very good.
Would require a very straight neck in very good condition.

Would be perfect for a fretless !

Doesn't seem like it would track a bend.

But, unless this system can itself adjust for non-fourths tuning it would be out of tune on at least one string regardless of transposition
