New romantic tone?

Duran Duran, Roxy Music etc. Funky and electronic. What exactly was the sound?
On this "Same old Scene" (1980) Alan Spenner clearly plays a Precision, John Taylor had a similar sound from an Aria ProII. What was the effect chain?

I'd bet heavy compression and a chorus, along with double-tracking the bass in the studio. (In general, I'm not able to listen to this specific clip at work. )

I love Roxy Music.
+1 what Bongo said. That's gotta be just plenty of compression and chorus.

Yeah, and frequently with a pretty bright sound to start with.

OK, I just watched the clip- notice how he's playing with a pretty aggressive/dynamic technique back between the pickup and the bridge? Then notice how the bass tone has hardly any dynamic qualities whatsoever, it's just solid and thick and steady-level? With that playing technique his sound should be super bright and jumping all over the place volume-wise. I'm betting he's going through at least two compressors. No, really, I mean at least two. Plus a hint of chorus.

yes a lot of compression i believe... i find i can get a similar sound with my rickenbacker, a lot of treble and a lot of compression ( post recording).

i find it a lot easier to get that sound by recording my bass sound and compressing it afterwards.

finding this out was a guilty pleasure!
