Newb Advice? OH OH OH!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I checked the rules and didn't see anything other then "The only stupid question is one that is not asked." so I figured, eh why not.

Long story short, what effects should I look into? When I play guitar I use reverb and a fast chorus to emulate Charlie Hunter's organ tone.

But when it comes to bass... no clue where I should start? I like having my options open since I like using different tones for different reasons like a nice thick classic R&B tone for finger style or something gritty like Les Claypool when I slap. I really don't have a rig yet, but I'm starting to save up for one.

So what effects should I look into? I'm really into Soul, Jazz, Funk (Bootsy!), and Rock. Any multi effects that will keep me happy for under $300?

Thanks!

Under $300?
If you're dead-set on individual pedals, get a Tech21 Sans Amp Bass Driver DI, or VT Bass/VT Deluxe, or a Catalinbread SFT for the tone (R&B, slap, Soul, some funk, definitely rock) and get a phaser, octaver (especially analog octave down), envelope filter, or wah pedal for some funkyness.

Otherwise, the best idea would be to get a multi-effects pedal as it's a bang-for-your-buck type thing. As for what model, that is definitely something that you can search on here and get tons of hits.

I suggest watching Youtube videos of different effects and finding the ones that you enjoy listening to. You could go with a decent disto or fuzz for way less than 300 IMO. Of course I've never had the opportunity to own one that costs more than that.

Read through the threads here. Go to GC or your local guitar shop and try stuff out. Watch Youtube religiously. Those are my methods. Oh and have fun.

Also yes, definitely watch some videos and/or listen to some soundclips. I can totally attribute a ton of my GAS to doing just this.

And, as always, you can totally exploit the return policy of your local store to "audition" pedals with your setup. Sometimes it takes longer than a visit to a store to really learn the intricacies of a pedal.
However, even if you do keep the pedal beyond the return date, you can always sell it off on the forums here (you need a supporting membership, which is a very affordable $20 a year minimum) and make back some of the money that you spent.

Zoom processors would be right up your alley. the zoom b2.1u has effects that can easily give you a les claypool sound and a bootsy collins sound. I have sound samples of the zoom b2.1u on my soundclick website. here's the link if you're wondering how the zoom b2.1u sounds.

Feel free to check it out.

Sorry for resurrecting an "old thread" I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that replied!

The Sans Amp Bass Driver DI is on my list, your recommendations solidified that. Crystalman85, your samples were awesome... I'm diffidently going to be looking into a multi fx unit. I'm sick of pedal boards, playing guitar for years has made me hate them lol.

Again thanks guys!
