The Newest variation of "what fuzz is that?"--The Boris Edition

Sign in to disble this ad
The title track on Boris's Rainbow album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1z0FGxWi7Q&fmt=18

Right around the 2:40 mark, you'll hear it.

So, what fuzz/combination of pedals, techniques, and recording trickery is making that buzzsaw on sheet metal sound?

You can definitely tell on some notes that it has a prominent upper octave effect. So its got some sort of octavia to it, but it also sounds pretty damn gated. You got me, that's a killer tone.

1) who cares, it's a guitar solo and a poor indication at best of what the effect would sound like on bass

2) sounds like some kind of superfuzz variant to me

Have we seriously degenerated to the point where it is now impossible to appreciate anything that isn't voiced for bass, or isn't being used on bass? I think that's a damn schnazzy tone, personally, and I think it sounds awesome in context with the group. Is that not within your realm of appreciation, regardless of what it's being used on?

By the way, I see I'm not the only one who slips the "&fmt=18" into my links. Thanks for that, Deluge.

Oh i dig the tone and the solo. the song is just OK. have we seriously denegerated to the poiunt where it's no longer acceptable to randomly hate on all six string players?

I'll play nice

From what i've read floating around, for the distorted tone Wata uses:

-Boss Ds-1
-2 muffs; IC and Triangle
-Cranked Orange and Green amps

She has a few other cool things like Space Echo, Tremolo and an SIB delay...

I've also heard people say she uses a "Boss Super Feedbacker" which others have told me is just a modded DS-1 with feedback but i dunno and i was never interested enough to look into it...

Here's a pic... dunno how old it is either.

haha sorry for the half-assed response. I hope it helps some.

Not a problem--no point in giving a youtube link that's got no quality to it.

The problem with that is that it could be either her or Micho Kurihara playing the solo.

Can't help with the topic, but I can say that Wata has the greatest live guitar tone I've ever heard: Wata has the greatest live guitar tone I've ever heard.

It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether.

Boris live is a sore subject--I missed them by four people!

As in, the show sold out while I was four people from the door.

That sucks. I didn't "get" Boris until seeing them live. But I do think they are one of those rare bands that translates much better in concert than on their recordings, much like Skinny Puppy. In an entirely different, but wholly similar, sort of way.

Actually, little thing I picked up the other day--if you listen to any of Boris's records (full disclosure, I discovered this with the last three tracks on the American Smile) at about half volume with some decent headphones, they've really got some incredible mixing/mastering going on, but they mix some of the instruments so loudly that if you're listening to it at, say, 75% of an Ipod, it just becomes uncomfortable and tinninitus inducing.

Yes but lets face it they don't mix for ipods they mix for a good system. I also heard that the Japan mix is different then the US, so it looks like I'll be buy a third version of that album.

The Japanese version is quite a bit different, as it is most of the time. Longer song lengths, wildly different mix, etc.

My point was really that listening to Boris quietly is almost more rewarding then listening to them loud, if you're really paying attention.

I agree with your point, I listen to them a lower volumes most of the time. I love the density of the sounds they put into a recording, it takes a few times through to catch it all.

On the other hand, live..... they are LOUD!

One of the top 5 bands I have EVER seen live!

On topic as said by RC, it sounds like a supperfuzz to me.

I saw them on that tour with Micho Kurihara but I don't remember who played that solo......sorry.
