So, I've had this little box for about a week now, and, despite hating it right off the bat, I've messed with it for a good stretch every day, and have come to learn and appreciate it for what it is. What is it? Honestly, it feels like a very tweakable Boomstick Bottom Feeder/442 Red/whatever to me. It has the same kind of BuuuuhWAAAOOOOOW sweep, the same kind of dry cut to the envelope. However, you have much more control over how it all plays out, with resonance, output volume, and a wide berth of frequency ranges via the Depth knob. The two channels also have somewhat different voices, and running them both at the same time leads to some vocal, phase-like decays. I'm still not sure if I'm going to keep it (I really only need one general-purpose filter, and I don't know if this will hit that spot for me), but it is certainly a cool filter box.
Clips! All clips are played on my Human Base BaseX.oc5 set to get a kind of modern, aggressive tone, then into the FEA Dual Band comp, then into the Robotalk 2, then to a firewire interface, into the lappy, and then to your ears. The Robotalk 2's internal frequency DIP switches are set to the bass range.
Here is some crap slap. It starts clean, then I stomp on Side A solo, then Side B solo. The controls for each side are set as identical as I can make them, so that you can hear the different voicings: Sensitivity is at about 4:00, Depth is at about 1:30, Resonance is at about 2:00, Volume is set at 12:00, Blend is set at 12:00.
Here is some fingerstyle playing with the same settings and progression as above.
Here is the Robotalk 2 with the same settings as above, paired up with the AGRO. I play with just the AGRO on, then Side B solo into AGRO, Side A solo into AGRO, AGRO into Side B solo, AGRO into Side A solo.
Here is a clip that attempts to show what the Depth knob does. I have the blend fully wet, run the Depth knob from fully CCW to fully CW so you can hear what it does, then I turn the Sensitivity down and do it again, playing a riff at fully CCW, 9:00, 12:00, and then 12:00 again with the blend at 12:00.
Here is a clip showing the range of the Resonance control for both sides. I start with a clean pluck on the G, then pluck with the Blend fully wet and the Resonance at minimum, 12:00, maximum, then maximum with blend at 12:00. I do this for Side A solo, then Side B solo.
Here is a clip showing an envelope-phaser kind of sound by running both sides together. Side A has Sensitivity at 3:00, Depth at 12:00, Resonance at 3:00. Side B has Sensitivity at 12:00, Depth at 12:00, Resonance at 3:00. Blend is at 9:00.
Here is a clip showing the very vocal sounds this box can emit. I run the AGRO solo, then the AGRO into Side A with Sensitivity at 3:00, Depth at 1:30, Resonance at 3:00, Blend at 12:00. Then I run the AGRO into both sides, with Side A as above, and Side B with Sensitivity at 12:00, Depth at 12:00, Resonance at 3:00. Then I play the riff an octave down through both sides. I should also note that I cranked up the presence on the AGRO to accentuate the filter--which in turn makes it sound worse solo (in my opinion).
