Next box - compressor or equalizer?

Sign in to disble this ad
When our tax refund comes in (end of March maybe), my wife is allowing me $100 to splurge with The rest of the refund is going for a new dishwasher.

What I want to spend my $100 on is to add an effects box/pedal, but I'm not sure if it should be a compressor or a multi-band graphic equalizer.

My gear:
Schecter Diamond Elite-4 (2 band active) >>> SansAmp BDDI (for the tube sound) >>> Boss ODB-3 (for insanity) >>> Acoustic 260 mini stack (100w head/10" cab).

Note that the Acoustic head has only 3 band EQ and no compressor/limiter.

I'm thinking of an equalizer in order to add back in some of the mids that the BDDI takes out. Note that the BDDI, unlike the more expensive SansAmp programable DI, has no control for mids and neither does the ODB-3. I also can't seem to get the treble exactly where I want it.

Alternatively, I'm thinking of getting a compressor becuase of the erratic way that I play. By habit, I often tug on the E string like I was playing a double bass and pluck the G string as if it were a violin. So if I'm playing a run across the board, the lows are too loud and the highs are not loud enough.

My bigger amp (GK MB210 Combo) has a limiter which def helps on the low notes, but, of course, does nothing to make the high notes louder.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't think that either of those are your best bet. Sell your BDDI and buy a Bass VT. It has a mid control and it is FAR more versitile than the BDDI. The VT has some natural compression, so it might help you on that front. As for possible compressors, you pretty much have three to choose from: the Aphex Punch Factory, the BBE Opto Stomp, and the BOSS Bass Limiter/Enhancer. There are a few others in that range, but those are the ones that are generally used for bass that cost around $100.

+1, and besides, a compressor will not make up for bad playing technique, and the way you've described your playing, well...

This is a tough question to answer. I can only answer for myself.. my compressor is indispensable. I've had a boss bass eq that sits in my closet for about 5 or so years. Actually thinking about it now I should probably get rid of it and get another compressor... not even joking.
