cheap p bass -> cranked ampeg v4. You'll know the settings are right when it starts to tingle.

Never heard of Guyver, but I just looked it up, thanks!

It's Eva Unit 01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is my favourite anime ever, in the history of everything. I'm in the middle of re-watching the whole series lately, and as such, have been feeling more connected to my inner psyche/dork.

Wrong. Didn't he used a Sunn 300T?

I never watched much NGE, or much anime. I used to though, although the only anime I really like was Akira and Ghost in the Shell.

If he did it would've only been with Kyuss, never QOTSA.

I believe in kyuss he used a sunn concert/coliseum bass amp, but what most people refer to as the nick oliveri tone comes from that combo. I'm not sure if the 300t even existed during Nick's tenure with kyuss.

Sure he did, what do you think the song "Mondo Generator" is about?

It's about the solid-state Sunn amp he used to have with "mondo generator" spray-painted on the side. Not the 300T, that came way after the song.

With regards to his time with Queens, looks like he definitely used SVT-CL's at some stage. He also used them, while touring with Winnebago Deal (last pic) AKA Winnebago Generator for his time with them.

As for the best way to nail Nick's tone without buying an SVT? I'd get a MIA Precision bass, possibly loaded with Seymour Duncan pickups (IIRC that's what he uses a lot of the time), then run it through a Sansamp VT Bass. A fair few Talk Bassers seem to agree that it does a very good job, at simulating the SVT sound. I've never played through an SVT myself, but I can get a pretty good Oliveri sound with mine, I know that much.

A few more pics.

First with a SVT-VR (or original non-reissue version). It's hard to see, but after zooming in, I counted 7 knobs on the front (lookde like more to me at first).

Not sure what Ampeg model this is. It's not an SVT that I recognise, nor a V4. Infact I've not been able to find a single pic of him using a V4 (although that's not to say he hasn't used them).

EDIT: I thought those 5 white things on the head were knobs in the last pic, but I think they might actually be the switches on an SVT. Any ideas?

EDIT AGAIN: Enhanced version for your viewing pleasure -

I think that second amp is just an mti svt.

And yes, you can definitely cop that sound with an svt (at least a NMV svt, not sure about cl's), it's just louder and the 6550's sound a little different.
