Question NIN Echoplex Bass Tone

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm sure I could go into the ask JMJ thread with this but I thought I'd pose the question here, because I'm actually more interested in what we'd consider this tone.

I love this song and listen to it at least once a day. The Album version is slightly different tone wise than the Live at Rehearsals sound.

Is this the classic SVT OD sound? Or is this a slight OD? OD with a blend?

I'm wondering how to get a close facsimile of this sound using completely different gear. Bass with active pups,...solid state amps (GK MB2-500/check my user profile, it is up to date). Do you think Os' updated Gemini Drive (w/ slight grit) would fit the bill,...or perhaps a BDDI/VT Bass?

EDIT: Might help if I include the link.

Bump for edit,...

Also here is the studio version.

Also if you didn't know you can still download The Slip for free at NIN's website.

God I love the rehearsal tone. That has always been my end-all tone. Either way, there is definitely more than just an SVT there. Its grindy like the SVT but there is a little low-end fizz/fuzz that an SVT can't get you.

As far as I know JMJ did not record on The Slip. He's on the Rehearsals vid in my OP if you didn't click on it.

Remember to use a pick, thats a big part of it I think. Gives that grindy attack ontop of that big bottom.

I believe I remember Justin saying that Trent likes to use a Pbass in studio a lot of the time. (That would account for the aforementioned bottom.)

Plus in the rehearsal vid he's using his geddy loaded with DiMarzio Model J's. The Model J's add lotsof lows to the standard jazz sound.

Hmmm,....I've been trying to nail this sound it's no go. I'm thinking my setup is just so far away from his that it won't happen. I'm still wonder if I'll get there with a VT Bass or perhaps a Polish Love or the updated Gemini Drive,...which I'm aware that probably noone has had the chance to check out. It seems like low gain overdrive if there are any FX at all.

I've looked at photo's of JMJ's board and perhaps its the P&C I hear,...or that weirdo green European (?) "Tube Screamer",....who knows.

Would anyone say that is the typical overdriven SVT tone?

P Lyte. BTW, though I agree that it's got some fuzz on it (maybe the Assmaster?), it's not like Justin used the exact same stuff Trent used, so I think a lot of things would work to get that sound.
