Ok, here is the problem. I want that 'nine inch nails sound' from my bass, jut not 100% sure how to get it.
My Bass has an EMG 40-P5 which turns my 5 string into as close to a P-Bass as it will ever go. I also DI allot to the mixing deck from my pedal board when I play live, so you can only use the gear below. Gear:
Boss bass EQ pedal (7 band)
Ibanez PD-7 overdrive
Sansamp Bass driver
Digitech BP-80
Any suggestions will be well recieved

Jordie White the current bassist is using a Way Huge Swollen Pickle and I wouldn't even both trying to get one of them just insane amounts of money.
The sansamp is a good start though as I'm sure there is one in his signal chain somewhere but you'll never be able to nail that tone (get it nail) because so much outboard and studio gear is used even live I'll post a pic of the NIN studio and you'll see what I mean.

Here's the link for it http://www.wrenandcuff.com/pickle_pie.html |

On WT - It sounds like he went a bit more analog - tube bass amps in various rooms cranked (ONLY's bassline sounds exactly like an 810 in a big room being dimed.)
But for the most recent album - he's right back to synth bass tones.
Check out Death by Audio - he makes some great wild noise makers that might be right up your alley for making attaining the NIN tone
The Sound Saw and a big muff is my favorite.
cheers,
michael

I used a Squire p-bass with an EMG Select pickup
Behringer EQ pedal
Big Muff Pi (re-issue)
Behringer Sansamp clone
As you can see, i have used very cheep gear here. I also recorded using the line in on my pc, so not exactly studio quality. Please let me know what you think.
I am purposely using my live setup as this is what I will be playing the most on. There is no point taking a £200 sansamp to a gig where some drunken idiot will spill his pint over it!

Not even slightly close I'm afraid, you're best doing a search I think there is something in the FAQ about the differences
