Nine Inch Nails bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, here is the problem. I want that 'nine inch nails sound' from my bass, jut not 100% sure how to get it.

My Bass has an EMG 40-P5 which turns my 5 string into as close to a P-Bass as it will ever go. I also DI allot to the mixing deck from my pedal board when I play live, so you can only use the gear below.

Gear:
Boss bass EQ pedal (7 band)
Ibanez PD-7 overdrive
Sansamp Bass driver
Digitech BP-80

Any suggestions will be well recieved

I highly rate the Boss FZ-2 for this sound if you do a search you'll find me clips doing some NIN riffs and I'm pretty happy with the results.

Jordie White the current bassist is using a Way Huge Swollen Pickle and I wouldn't even both trying to get one of them just insane amounts of money.

The sansamp is a good start though as I'm sure there is one in his signal chain somewhere but you'll never be able to nail that tone (get it nail) because so much outboard and studio gear is used even live I'll post a pic of the NIN studio and you'll see what I mean.

You could try the Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie, it's a clone of the Swollen Pickle, which is the fuzz that Jordie White uses.

Here's the link for it http://www.wrenandcuff.com/pickle_pie.html

Bass tone on DS reminds me of really thick synth bass with either some kind of bitcrusher and a huge boost - or a fuzz that is run full range (re: LOTS of HF content.)

On WT - It sounds like he went a bit more analog - tube bass amps in various rooms cranked (ONLY's bassline sounds exactly like an 810 in a big room being dimed.)

But for the most recent album - he's right back to synth bass tones.

Check out Death by Audio - he makes some great wild noise makers that might be right up your alley for making attaining the NIN tone

The Sound Saw and a big muff is my favorite.

cheers,

michael

Another Red Llama clone would be the Tonefactor/Mojohand Mule, link http://www.tonefactor.com/proddetail.php?prod=Mule

Could I use a Big Muff instead of a Way Huge Swollen Pickle?

Maybe an old green one but not a new one.

Like I said Boss FZ-2 sounds like this http://myselfalone.com/tayste2000/BossFZ-2.mp3

Here is my big muff version:

http://www.iamnoone.co.uk/chris/big%20muff.mp3

I used a Squire p-bass with an EMG Select pickup
Behringer EQ pedal
Big Muff Pi (re-issue)
Behringer Sansamp clone

As you can see, i have used very cheep gear here. I also recorded using the line in on my pc, so not exactly studio quality. Please let me know what you think.

I am purposely using my live setup as this is what I will be playing the most on. There is no point taking a £200 sansamp to a gig where some drunken idiot will spill his pint over it!

also, what is the difference between original Big Muffs, Russian Big Muffs, and the USA Re-issue big muffs? Surely the re-issue's are identical to the originals?

Not even slightly close I'm afraid, you're best doing a search I think there is something in the FAQ about the differences
