Save up some and buy an HBE Hematoma or Fulltone Bassdrive.

Both get much love round here, and I for one LOVE my Hema.

Oh, and from what I've hear of the ODB, its more a fuzz/distortion than a true OD. IIRC there are clips on the boss site.

Goodness! The ODB-3 gets so maligned in here. I think it is a cool sounding pedal for over-the-top industrial sounds. It also sounds pretty "gnarly" on riff-oriented material.

Sure it's not a natural sounding "overdrive" by any means. Yes, there are a lot of great sounding real overdrives out there. I do think the ODB-3 has its' place, however. I still have mine (although it hasn't occupied a permanent place on my board in years...) and occasionally it gets used live or even in the studio.

For the record, I am a tone freak. I currently use, or have owned, such "quality" pedals as the Fulltone Bass-Drive, EBS Valve Drive, Zvex Wooly Mammoth, HAO Rust Ride, EH Big Muff, Stamps Drive-O-Matic, Mesa V-Twin, Ashdown Bass Drive, etc. While I definitely don't consider the ODB-3 a great "overdrive", it is a pretty bad-ass sounding "fuzzy-distortion".

end of rant

can you mention a few high gain overdrives you have personally used which dont really loose the bottom end

Yeah!

Some may argue the point, but in real-world (as opposed to living-room) situations I like the Fulltone Bass-Drive. Not the old version, but the Mosfet version. I had the old one but the new Mosfet Bass-Drive has a lot more low-end.

EBS Valve Drive. It loses no low-end! I prefer it myself for lower od settings, but it does get crunchy!

While I don't own one, the Xotic BB Pre-Amp had a nice crunch w/ little low-end suck. I may still buy one...

Also the Mesa V-Twin is great for crunchy tones. It doesn't suck low-end - but as it was designed for guitar, the bass eq point doesn't really add bass either.

Conversely, here are pedals that I experienced significant low-end loss from:
Ashdown Bass-Drive
HAO Rust-Ride (probably the worst low end loss I've heard from a pedal designed for bass!)
Stamps Drive-O-Matic
Ibanez Tube Screamer (unmodded)

IMHO low-end loss is overrated. I use a Marshall Blues Breaker copy, it definitely loses some bottom end, but carefully tweaking the controls yields very good results (lower the tone and increase level). I also have a EBS Multi Drive and nowadays I prefer Blues Breaker.

For ODB-3: Never used but it's constant in Flea's pedalboard so it can't be bad after all. I like Flea's sound. I also like the sound samples in www.bossus.com

One of the best clips of the ODB-3, ever: RHCP "Around the world". Helluva way to start an album.

Misleading: The consensus is that the recorded version of the song was done by playing through a cranked marshall amp.

Having heard it live in the front row, I don't think it does the recording tone justice. Doesn't have that same raging breakup. One day I'd like to try bi-amping my bass through a bass and guitar amp to get an overdrive sound. Something like the orange tiny terror, you could drive those tubes really easy and get something nasty.

The Fulltone Bass Drive is your friend.

Boss pedals are mostly not good, IME.

You can get an Ibanez PD7 on ebay for about $40. I like it for distortion.
