Thumbs up NOC3 EarthTone Boost Pedal REVIEW

Sign in to disble this ad
Alrighty!
I've had a little time with this tiny pedal, and have done up a review for anyone interested.
The short version down below.

Manual

Proguitarshop demo

I tried this pedal with two different basses. A passive P-bass wannabe, and an active with the SMB-4A (musicman style) pup with the SD basslines preamp. Very close to a stingray in terms of output and sound.
I also used it with my full pedal board - VT bass/PBDDI as a preamp then to a tube slave.

It has a cool paintjob.
Passes the shake test with nothing moving around at all - and is VERY neat inside. Very short wiring indeed!

First up;
Bass -> Earthtone -> VT bass -> Slave

Passive bass
With a P - this little booster is really good. Very transparent.
The "sweetness" that the manual describes is only a very minimal effect, and (very slightly) makes the treble seems a little more full.
This effect is not even noticeable at higher volumes - only at quiet "testing" volume.

Active Bass
Hmmmm......
It seems this booster doesn't like a hot output when you power it at 9 volts DC. It clips in the low range.
BUT. You can either, power it at 12v or 18v, according to the manual.
At 12v it handled my stingray wannabe bass quite well, provided I didn't boost any of the tone bands, and used "passive mode". Which I do always, so this is just fine for me.
I'd like to test 18v, and let my active loose, but I just don't have the means.
Seems to me the point at which this pedal clips is very similar to the "volume levels/signal intensity" when some fuzz pedals (like my Supercollider for one) get overly saturated at and sound like poo.

This booster works really well with OD's. It makes my Mi Audio Blue Boy Deluxe sound killer when I nail it with full volume.

One thing I've noticed;
Since this pedal can CUT and BOOST, is that the unity volume setting is NOT always at 12 o'clock. It all depends on how hot the signal you feed it in the first place, as to where the knob will have to be for unity.

All in all - I'm happy. Nice little booster/buffer for the front of my signal chain, provided I run it at 12v or more.
At 9v, it will only be useable for low outputpassive basses due to the clipping mentioned above.

To sum up;

PRO's
-True Bypass
-Small footprint
-can boost and cut
-blue LED and a very cool paint job
-cheap

CON's
-input must be low for a 9v power source
-must be powered above 9v for hot signals/active's, preferably 18v for max headroom

Hope it helps,
smo

great review.

The proguitarshop demo link isn't working, but otherwise.

Not sure what you're looking for when you say "fat goodness".
This pedal doesn't seem to have a bass cut or roll-off if thats what you mean?
If you're looking for a booster with eq shaping there are other options out there.

The pedal is just a simple linear boost or cut. (i think)

There's no real change in the EQ that I can tell, but you'd want to use at least 12v with it. 9v will give you a tendancy to fart a bit a little with actives.
I simply use mine first in the signal chain, so I can match outputs of different guitars.

That all said - give NOC3 an email - he's been SUPER helpful answering my emails. Really nice guy.
