noise issues with headphones

Sign in to disble this ad
I think it may in part be due to the wiring in my house but I get noise through headphones that I don't really get through my amp. Well, let me clarify some more, the noise level through the amp fluctuates but through headphones there is a constant noise. It's a fairly high pitched hum and it goes away if I step on a pedal with bare feet. So, if I'm recording or playing through headphones I try to keep a bare toe on something at all times. Now, as it's turning colder here in New England I'm far less inclined to take my shoes off as my music room isn't very well heated. Anybody have similar issues? Suggestions? Does the EHX Hum Debugger help with this kind of noise? Or a power conditioner? I don't think it's a grounding issue in the bass because it doesn't matter which bass I'm playing or how I'm touching it.

If it goes away when you touch bare metal with bare flesh, then it's one of two things.

1. bad grounding - not necessarily with you bass, but potentially with other equipment in your chain - including your amps input circuitry.

2. radio frequency interference - conditions are just right for RF to enter the signal chain... until you change the conditions by making your body part of the circuit.

One good thing to do to help alleviate both problems is to get yourself some good quality cables all around.
