Noise Suppression Pedal vs. Noiseless Pickups

Sign in to disble this ad
which is better?
haha. let me rephrase...
which would be better for my buzzing MIJ Fender Jazz?
i'm on a budget, but my Paypal account is pretty pretty right now.
That Boss NS-2 is lookin' mighty nice, considering i could pick it up today at a local music store for $50.
I have recently considered getting noiseless p-ups, but that'll run me over $100 and would require more time on the bench, plus i coud use the NS-2 for my guitar, right?

so either talk me out of a $50 purchase and spend three times as much, or fight it out over which is preferable!

Noise suppressors in general suck terribly, I do not recommend any of them. It's way better to eliminate the source of the noise. However since it sounds like you're talking about EMF hum, there's one pedal that people have recommended pretty well for that, the EHX Hum-Debugger. I haven't tried it, but supposedly it works for humming single-coil pickups.

First (and cheapest!) step should always be to shield the inside of your bass super thoroughly, including the pickup cavities and any wiring channels (if possible). Make sure all shielding material is soldered together, or connected with conductive adhesive.

If shielding does not help enough with the hum, then try that EHX pedal. If that's no good, then try hum-canceling pickups. Dimarzio and SGD make some excellent ones.
