Noise-Supressor (shin-ei super-fuzz content)

Hey everyone,

Today at bandpractice our drummer brought an old 70s pedal he got from his uncle. Our guitarist tried it but the tone didn't fit our style. Then for fun, I tried it and the tone was so amazing.

I came home and looked it up and it seems this is an shin-ei superfuzz from the 70s.

Now I REALLY like the tone but whenever I'm not playing there's alot of noise and buzzing which I can't get rid of. Would a noise supressor get rid of the unwanted noise?

First I'd bring it to an electronics tech who can diagnose if there are any mods or repairs to be done, to reduce or eliminate the cause of the noise. A noise suppressor might help some, but if the noise is loud enough then the gate may not open and close in any useful way, and generally I do not recommend using them.

Something like the Boss NS-2 or the higher-end ISP Decimators might work. They have loops that you can put your noisy pedals in, and the gate is controlled by your bass' clean signal, rather than the compressed, noisy fuzzed signal.

Out of curiosity, what is this pedal that your drummer picked up?

I agree with Bongo, see if the pedal can be modded, or possibly even repaired, before investing in a noise suppressor. I once owned an ISP Decimator, which is the best NR pedal available. Problem with them is, 1) it takes up space on your board, and 2) correcting the problem is always better than "masking" it. And all suppressors only work when you're not playing, between the notes.

Google search of the bold text netted:

EDIT: FWIW,...I'm also inclined to agree that having a pedal mod or repairman have a look at it and see if some of your issues can be cleared up with some thoughtful engineering.

Yup that's the one.

I'll try to get a hold of a camera and post pics when I get home from work.

To be honest I have no idea where to find someone with the electronics skills to take a look at it but I'll try to find someone.

Also, that's a seriously valuable pedal you've got there.
