Not exactly a bass question but....

Sign in to disble this ad
I play bass (duh) but I also sing a little...

I want to put effects on the vocals. How do I do this without huge amounts of feedback?

The practice space is small and I don't have a ton of money.

I do have a couple of nearly disposable alesis and digitech multi-effects processors but the feedback is incredible (in a bad way).

I would like to add the following sounds to vocals: (a little fuzz/distortion, some delay, etc...) our board has reverb but it won't let you use the send/return and the built in reverb at the same time so I've been trying to use the effects in-line...

Ideas?

Keeping your PA speakers pointed away from your vocal mics will help.

Have a look at some feeback destroyers. Or while someone is singin, mess about with the EQ, back the highs and high mid's a bit...

Have a look on that gear sluts website... not that the good people of TB can't answer this question... that site is made for questions like this....

Oh, i forgot to add... you know them little shields you can get for studio vocal mics... for acoustics n that... use one of them... they help... or just make your own.

Just to stop the sound comin from the p.a. goin back through the mic. Works for us! really well...

In a small space, stay away from reverb and use just a touch of delay (1 or 2 pings and a quick fade).

Thanks for the suggestions:

We've done the EQ thing....

We've got the mics as far away as we can and pointed in the right direction.

No reverb? Really? Is that just life in a small practice space?

I will look into:
gear sluts
shields
and
feedback busters

I will let you guys know if I have more questions...thanks.

Also, Ehx recently introduced a muti fx pedal, specifically for vocals. You may wanna check into that, as well.

Are you talking about the Voice Box? I was looking at that too but I don't think it does the distortion kind of stuff.

Anybody familiar with the Digitech vx400? I don't think I'd go near anything like that for bass (sorry, not trying to be a snob) but shoot, my vocals are throw away anyway...I just don't want to spend that much....

I'm not looking for anything crazy...not heavy stuff...just some fuzz/dirt, some echo/delay, just some stuff around the edges to make it interesting, some atmosphere...you know...

If I knew how to sing I wouldn't need it....but....

The singer/songwriter that I play bass with uses the Digitech. He likes the delays on it and the telephone/megaphone FX. He still gets feedback on the Tele/Megaphone but he also likes to set up his mic in front of his Powered Speakers. And Uh...it's purple.
