Not sure what I need...

Hey guys,

I've recently setup a synth rig, and one thing that has come to my attention is that there can be some crazy volume spikes from time to time that I can't really prevent or control.

I was wondering if there was a pedal (perhaps a limiter or compressor) that I could throw in its chain to help tame these spikes and prevent speaker damage.

If you have any suggestions of what I may need then please share them!

Thanks!

ps. These spikes happen both in the high end and the low end, if that makes any difference.

I've used both the Milkbox and M87 for taming the peaks from my wah and env filters and they both worked fine.

I refuse to use compression because:

1) I'm stubborn
2) I have no more unallocated board space
3) I pride myself on my mad knob fiddling skillz

Of course, that means I have to find the sweet spot on my filters well before it's time to get dirty.

I don't know what the limiting is like on the TLC, but the Demeter both compresses and limits. It clamps down on the spikes from my Freqbox to protect my speakers from blowing and my amp from limiting its power section.

The Boss LMB-3 is a surprisingly effective solution, just for limiting. Put it at the end of the chain and play away. It's cheap and would get the job done - also helpful to have a buffered pedal at the end of your chain if you're running plenty true bypass pedals.
