Number of pedals/effects at home, vs playing live

Sign in to disble this ad
How many of your pedals do you take to gigs with you? All? A few? None?

If you bring them all, how do you compete for stage space?

If you bring some, do you rip apart your masterboard at home every week?

If you bring none, is it weird playing live with stripped sound?

All of my pedals fit neatly on a pedalboard, so it's not really a big deal for me to bring all of them with me everywhere. I only use certain pedals at certain places (I use everything on Saturdays, while I use mainly my volume, comp, chorus, and flanger at church on Sundays) but it'd be a huge hassle to disassemble and re-assemble everything every week. Stage space is never a problem for me, as there is ample room to spare in both of the places that I play at. (Saturdays it's with a 9-piece praise band playing contemporary, and Sundays it's with a 6-piece praise band playing the Sunday usual)

For me it's usually weird when I practice, as I just run through a headphone amp (so as to reduce noise) and I don't use my effects, which sounds stripped down to me.

I used to bring 'em all.

One of the bands I was in had a TON of gear, so half of us generally set up off the stage on smaller gigs.

Otherwise, we just had a cramped stage.

They're scattered around his living room. Sometimes you'll see one in a shoe, in the fridge, in the toilet's water tank, boxes of cereal, and under his mattress.

I was going to take pictures of my pedals before and after I joined TB 4months ago. I gave in to my pedal GAS. It about tripled.

But your collection would make mine humble.

And the sad part is that I only really use a EQ-pedal and a delay.

I use everything live. I'm in a pop/funk band, and I've got around fifteen pedals on my board. Use 'em all, every night.

I used to just hoarde my pedals until I realised I could afford new pedals by selling the old ones. So now I'm down to just keeping the pedals I use live/in the band, though any pedals I can't get any money for get to lie around.

dang,... I have 9,... well 11 if you include my zoom B2 and my really old Korg AX1000G that I never use anymore,... but thats ok with me, cos 11 is my lucky number

realistically, there is only ONE pedal to rule them all, and thats,... my weeping demon

I take 3 pedals if all I need is distortion, wah and tuner and im in a hurry ,... else ill take the board with everything but the wah on it,... the B2 is just a headphones scenario

I only ever bring one or two pedals, if any, to a gig. I HATE having a ton of crap at my feet during a gig. And I'm lazy and hate having to pack up the same ton of crap after the gig.

When I do bring any effects it's usually just an envelope filter or wah. Sometimes for a classic rock gig just the Russian Big Muff Pi.

Unless you count the Boss TU-2; that comes to every gig.

Five pedals on the board, for all situations:

Looper from kit musikding
dunlop wha 105Q
Ebs multicomp
Ebs octabass
Coxx PT tuner

And:
an old PS-2 from boss that i use only for deep FLoyding evenings with some dark friends

a jamman that i use at home to work, and at rehearsals to record easily.

an old cry baby guitar; which is close to death...

How many of your pedals do you take to gigs with you? All? A few? None?
Usually my main board consisting of 8 pedals, a loop strip & tuner. If it's the 1st time I've played with an artist, I will only bring about 2 or 3 - you don't want to scare a new employer too much on the first gig! I have almost 20 pedals to choose from, but there are 8 "primary" pedals that live on my main board. I find them to be the most useful to me, so they go to almost every gig.

If you bring them all, how do you compete for stage space?
I'm lucky enough to play 99% large stages, but there's always room for a reasonable pedalboard - unless you dance around a lot!

If you bring some, do you rip apart your masterboard at home every week?
Almost, I do rip apart my board pretty often to assemble a "flight board" for when I have to check my pedals. Although, my main board travels well, airline baggage restrictions ($$$) are making me travel lighter....

If you bring none, is it weird playing live with stripped sound?
No, but I usually find that I could have used something here or there... but it's good to go "au naturale" sometimes!

How many of your pedals do you take to gigs with you? All? A few? None?

The concept is "all my pedals are in a pedalboard and I bring the pedalboard". But in the near future I'll have to decide whether or not I start a new pedalboard, because I need some more pedal for one band (and not the other), and there's no room left in the main board.
So I'll probably end up with the current pedalboard, slightly modified and an additionnal board for weirds sounds and effects.

If you bring them all, how do you compete for stage space?

I play in relatively small bands (3 or 4 members and only one guitarist) so no problem here. Plus I won't let anyone bother me with stage space: I need space, I take it, period.

If you bring some, do you rip apart your masterboard at home every week?

I never ripp appart my board, except for major rearrangement, every year or two ...

If you bring none, is it weird playing live with stripped sound?

Sometime I jam with naked sound but I always feel like I miss something. There's always a moment where I wish I could add some overdrive, a bit of wha or a little chorus ...
