oc-2 vs fx25b?

Sign in to disble this ad
i'm trying to decide between the two- i used to have an oc-2 which i eventually sold because i got an octabass, but now i'm kinda missing the fat sine-wave tone it gave me... then i searched around and saw the threads on the fx25 as a lowpass filter.

as of this point i have absolutely no idea what i'll be using them for, so as a matter of preference, which are you guys more inclined towards?

I haven't tried the OC-2, but the FX-25b is way too synthy for my tastes.

Both a octave into a filter is something big, thick, and juicy to behold.

Note that IMO the "best sounding" FX25 is the older non-sparkley green two-knob version, and the "next best" is the sparkley green two-knob FX25, and the "least good sounding" is the FX25B.

I've owned numerous OC-2's and FX-25's and FX-25B's. They're both great pedals. Which one you should get in my mind depends on which one you're going to use, I wouldn't buy a pedal I wasn't planning on using for something, so you should give it some thought. But really, OC-2's and FX-25's can be found cheaply enough that you might be able to swing both of them, and if you run the OC-2 into the FX-25, I'll bet you'll get some awesome sounds.

I've been using the OC-2 since 1987 and it's quite excellent. It can also produce quasi-synth sounds depending on your bass's pickup selection/EQ/attack, and sometimes with a little chorusing on top of that. Even though the octave sounds are artificial (as they are in ALL of these type of octaver's), the OC-2 literally tracks not just the pitch and dynamic of the notes, but also the TONE of what you're putting into it. So when then the octave and direct sounds are carefully blended, this old box is really quite versatile.

I personally never use the "2 octaves below" sound. IMO, it's too low, too dark. I removed the knob because it always seemed to get turned up accidentally even though I always had it turned all the way down.

Sorry I can't compare it to the FX-25 as I've never played one, but wanted to offer my experience with the OC-2. I have played the EBS octaver and while it can seem more impressive upon A/Bing, it really wasn't ultimately as accurate or versatile for what I needed my octaver to do.

This is a hard one just because of the OC-2 being an octaver and the FX25 being an envelope filter. I don't have any experience with the OC-2 but I do have an FX35 (octoplus) and octave pedals are great to mess around with. If you can afford both, get em...if not get the OC-2 IMO.

The Octave Multiplexer could be a nice intermediate between these pedals.
It has filters and it does low octave.

Yes! That's why I miss it so much... if I do get the OC-2 I'll be using it 100% oct-1/0% dry for that lovely synth tone it has.

Is "best sounding" relative here? I'm just looking at the big round tones I can get out of both pedals.
